Sounds like Dad raised a pedantic turd who's got a few more shelves that need breaking. The healing is implied. The strengthening is the result of recovering from the trauma. No one has ever lay there, blasted to dust and crushed into the ground and thought, "Boy, I sure am stronger now."
Healing doesn't make you stronger either. Break your back and after it heals come back and tell me that your back is stronger now. It will never be the same again. Some damage just leaves you weaker. Don't glorify injury or healing.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the writer doesn't know anyone with cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, POTS, fibromyalgia, cluster headaches...the list goes on and on. What doesn't kill you can leave you drained, unable to heal before the next injury or wave of pain or exhaustion washes over you.
I smashed the right side of my ribcage to smithereens over 40 years ago. Doctors told me they couldn't repair the bones without cutting my breathing muscles, which they refused to do. All those pointy little bone shards inside me hurt sharply for years but eventually settled to a dull ache as the bone fragments remodeled themselves and rounded off a bit. It's as healed as it will ever be, it still hurts, and I was much stronger before that happened.
Life seems way too short to fit in all the healing you need, the way the big injuries just keep coming and coming, seemingly one right after the other...
Look, metaphors are great...for explaining things that are already figured out by normal means. Too many people try to *start* with metaphors to explain a thing, which can easily miss all kinds of complexities and be downright propaganda in some cases. It's just declaring "this is like that" where the 2 things aren't related at all and are at best similar in 1 or 2 ways, while the ways they're wildly different get ignored.
Nope. Sorry, not how that works. That leg ain't growing back. That trauma isn't going away. That shoulder will never work the same as it used to. That knee will never NOT hurt going up stairs for the rest of your life. It might give you some mental fortitude, but there are a lot of physically disabled people out there who really, REALLY fucking hate this sentiment. That which doesn't kill you still leaves you crippled forever, sometimes. Saccharine bullshit.
What doesn't kill you, gives you time to heal from it. You don't automatically come out stronger. Often you'll come out weaker.
Go ahead, break that large steel beam and pretend it can "heal up stronger". Go destroy the trunk off a redwood until only the smallest lowest branches exist,,, and see how much "stronger" it is. Go kill an entire coral, leaving only a small chip of it alive.
The quote is dumb, and the extended metaphor doesn't help fix it. Like putting wood glue on a collapsed lung.
If you get injured or sick (or face other hardships) but survive, it won't make you physically stronger.
I believe what you're meant to take from it is that it's the learning and growing you need to do to cope and get through it, when facing adversity, that makes you grow stronger from experience.
If you do it right, you'll even come out of it with more empathy and understanding for others who struggle.
which is the point. Its not random hardship, not random "does'nt kill you". Its a very specific band of stuff you can basically get hurt as little as possible (ideally none, ala actual teaching) while learning and growing.
The "doesn't kill you" is almost incidental to the process, other then "if it killed you, you're dead".
Isn't this adage about learning from your mistakes? As in, you're not necessarily physically stronger but as long as it doesn't kill you it will teach you an invaluable lesson? That's what I always took away from it
Wood glue is incredible stuff, it will bond wood fibers, especially lengthways, more strongly than the tree itself. So in theory, a broken part can become stronger than the original piece. BUT I always clamp the wood for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour and then don’t stress the parts for 24 hours. Then and only then will it be ready. Same for people. Take time to heal.
Okay, so what happens when you're being forced to take time away from recovery or can't afford the optimal wood glue for the type of wood you're dealing with?
“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” ― Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms
Well I mean, it's not the healing. It's the thing that provides the healing. So technically drugs can make you stronger. That is the lesson I am taking away.
Well, some things that don't kill you might still leave you weaker or - as the post said - brittle. No amount of healing can fix every illness or injury. The takeaway point is not to live your life by trite affirmations.
Had a medical condition that I didn't notice/pay attention to for potentially a year, maybe even longer. Fixing/removing the source has left me with what else was damaged during the time I sick. Before I could ride a bike or walk a good distance, currently both feel like they'd kill me.
You snap a shelf in half and glue it back together, maybe it's stronger. You smash a window and glue it back together, maybe it's stronger but now you can't see out of it properly. It's survived, and maybe it got stronger, but it's no longer able to do what it was made for. I think people tend to be more like windows than bookshelves.
Yeah but we never get time to heal properly, like goddamn every day there's some new thing breaking us down before the bone sets or the cut scabs or the glue dries. The world needs to just take a week long break for everyone to just recover.
It's a fair point. And I get the weariness. I really do. But, dude, that's life. It's the way it's always been. That doesn't mean we shouldn't collectively strive for better. While there are challenges now in our time that are new and serious, we've also made a lot of progress on the problems we've faced throughout history, too.
No offense but it just isn't. Life is a hell of a lot less stressful than capitalism makes it. The typical medieval farmer worked less than a modern American. The speed of technological advance over the last century combined with the collapse of labor unions and globalization have turned people into cogs in a never stopping machine. Advances that should have lead to improvements for everyone just put more wealth into fewer and fewer hands.
So fucking true, it can feel like one step forward and 2 steps back, especially when triggers are still around. I'm lucky that I've managed to get to 3 steps forward 2 steps back, so still ahead of it. I really hope you get to heal stranger, you're not alone I'm here if you ever need an ear. I get it, trauma fucking sucks 😡😢
I'm tired boss. I'm tired of people being ugly to each other, but really I'm much more tired from having to work seven days a week at two jobs, and even then not being able to afford any time off
I've always said we aren't angry enough. Not angry enough at the constant demands in life that are also unreasonable. But it's just fucking tough to be mad sometimes. It takes so much energy to be mad. Energy we often have to use just to stay afloat.
That's the point of keeping us like that. It's why revolutionary organizations like the black panthers spent 90% of their time on mutual aid communities, making lives easier so people had breathing room.
Let's be honest those for few weeks of the lockdown a lot of people got a break, and a chance to heal a bit. Then it went all to shit so fast and I don't see the bottom of the slide.
I never went to lockdown. Just death and destruction since March of 2020. Last vacation or fun since January of 2019. I just want to have fun. Does that exist or am I imagining things? I am glad people got to reset, but does it end? Yes, I have had days off, but no fun has been experienced since then. Just demands and more demands and bills
Lol yeah. In that metaphor, we are holding books and praying we don't collapse. We can wood glue all we want, but if we don't get time to set, we just solidify in a weaker state.
We really need to get out of this infinite growth death spiral, societies could still function without this go go go rush rush rush, no time off, grinding, and in fact, this is exactly what climate scientists are advising, we need a society with way less commuting and way less unnecessary travel of all kinds, and a more relaxed day to day mindset. I don't care if shops have to close more often, or if my package takes a few weeks instead of 5 days. I wish the greedmasters could just be more chill
My take was - you may not have died, but it killed you. Weak, resentment, bitter. Cursing life until the end. Or you grow stronger. "Growing or dying" is a real thing.
Back when the adage was coined, I'm willing to bet there WAS time to let things set. A near-death experience or greivous injury probably holed you up for months, with plenty of time not only to physically recover but also mentally recover as well (if you knew how, of course). The fact that we have to clarify like this just highlights how much different the world is from what it once was.
That's been the biggest issue for everyone at my work. Sickness just stays and stays because we can't take the time to actually get better. So we take a day or two off at most, then back to work before you're fired.
I got into a car accident on my way to work yesterday (minor, but it triggered some memories from a pretty bad wreck I was in when I was younger). It has sent me into a depression/anxiety spiral that I cannot get out of, and I called off work today and I'm calling off tomorrow, too, cuz I'm a mess. But now I'm also terrified I'm gonna get fired.
Look into therapy and sign up for FMLA if you've been there long enough. Its not just for constant issues. If that's not an option find out what short term disability coverage us like. Mental health can be covered too.
I *just* passed 90 days, so I don't think fmla applies yet. I should also mention that I'm actually interviewing tomorrow and I have to drive 45 minutes each way for it, and I'm currently panicked wide awake bc of it. But I cannot reschedule this interview, I want this job badly, as my current one hasn't been good for my mental health, either. I'm a whole fucking mess.
In America we have Americans with Disabilities Act which is there to protect you from getting fired for things like Depression, etc. it's a form from your healthcare to your Dr. Which is a bat shit sentence. Might help?

Metaphors are nice, but sometimes they just don’t match reality.
Still, hopefully this helps someone.

Personally I prefer "What doesn't kill me has made a tactical error."
Tezerah1
Na. Something can come so close to killing you that you can never heal right. It can age you past the ability to heal.

Not all sayings/phrases/adages/etc are meant to apply to everything. This one is more about resilience and growth. 1/2

2/2 somethings are hard to do, you have to push yourself, almost until it makes you want to give up but it makes you stronger in the end
