Congratulations to all the whiny comedians that finally got their revenge on the teachers that had the gall to have them stop disrupting class. Sure, there's other reasons why teachers and education in general are despised and no longer valued in America, but I blame comedians and comedy writers for disrespecting my profession. Yes, we need INTELLIGENT comedians. Not lowbrow ones that mock teachers for a punchline. I'm talking about the people that write for the SImpsons, Rick & Morty, commercials like that one travel commercial where the 'teacher' is just letting her students run wild while she dreams of summer vacation. Hell, even Bill Watterson of Calvin & Hobbes is guilty of demonization of teachers for the sake of a joke. There are other, more political problems, but petty comedy has played a part.

And yet she's portrayed as a fat, tired, old, out of touch and irritable individual who teaches because it's a job, not because she cares. She doesn't try to nurture Calvin's creativity or attempt to help him learn through a method that works for him. True, teachers were not as informed or educated on special needs kids and how to approach their social and emotional needs, but she's still a representative of negative stereotypes towards teachers in the media.

And just for more context, since I've clearly offended people, I LOVE Calvin & Hobbes. It is a very precious and dear part of my childhood. I was alive when it was being published, I have the expensive hardback book collection, and I think it should be mandatory reading for pretty much everyone because it IS smart and wonderful. But if you can put aside the defensive reaction to what I said, you'll see that Mrs. Wormwood WAS a negative stereotype of a teacher.

Are you donating plasma or donating blood? I ask because I know there are some contexts where people use them as synonyms but they're not the same thing. Plasma is one component of your blood. When you donate plasma you're hooked up to a machine that separates out the plasma then returns the rest of your blood to you through a separate IV. In the US you can't be paid for whole blood donation, but you can be paid for plasma donation.

In Los Angeles housing is so ridiculous, teachers drive 1 to 2 hrs to go to work because they live in areas they can afford. The Westside of L.A. is especially teacher "poor."

In much of California, LA much more specifically, it's the government making it illegal to build denser housing. Drive around LA. What do you see? Single family homes with a big yard as far as the eye can see in every direction. Couple low supply with high demand and insane compensation levels at Big Tech companies, and it's a perfect storm.

My mom's been teaching for decades in some pretty rough schools, but current kids are killing her. The parents just don't raise their kids- they're not potty trained in kindergarten yet even. Just don't have kids if you're going to ignore them completely

There's a lot that leads into that actually. Districts being pushed into not being able to make kids stop hitting or breaking things for fear of parents suing. The kids doing what they should basically learn acting like that has no downside so more do that. It's a nightmare. This in particular is less about the teachers and more about the parents thinking their kid does no wrong and districts realizing that caving to that is cheaper than fighting lawsuits.

They've been that all throughout history, yet somehow public education improved and the average IQ keeps increasing with each generation. There has been a recent downward trend in PISA performance, but that's throughout the entire OECD area due to COVID (plus education cuts in the US).

The overall knowledge pool has increased dramatically. Very few people were interested in computers back when I went to school)

Oh my God, no! The kids these days are BY FAR more intellectual and aware than we were back in the 70s + 80s, and what I saw in the 90s. I thought the whole "the younger generation is worse than we were" was over. We were animals in elementary school in the 70s. We spat on each other. There were fights every weeks. Hell, they're teaching basic Algebra in 5th grade. When did you take Algebra. Quit trying to be special by putting down kids.

I'm a middle school teacher and I agree. Kids nowadays are so socially and politically aware, we have 6th graders taking zero period now, they're so bright and creative and so passionate about fixing the world's problems. Granted the BAD kids are badder than ever, but overall I've been so impressed with the current generation. They are way more socially awkward though, just something I've noticed

I'm gonna be honest, there are definite differences between what I remember and the kids today but most of them are positive. They seem smarter, still kind, still just as empathetic and mine want to play outside more than I ever did. I realize my field of reference is limited but I definitely am not on the "kids these days" bandwagon. Except for the damn crop tops. Crop tops fucking everywhere.
