Tetherball. Pretty sure we had that same brick wall too.

I didn't get it, until it hits me.

And we’d wash ourselves with a rag on a stick

Ah Yes, Reaganomics

I never liked tetherball because the ball hurt my hand to hit it

Would you have to tie an onion on your belt?

AKA Tether Ball

Ball on top of parachute day was my favorite. I loved that and ribbon dancing too. 6'4" and cis male. Don't care, I was fabulous!

They still do the parachute! My wife is a Gr 1 teacher

It’s weird that society makes boys care. You should be as fabulous as you want! Be free with your ribbons!

I was 5th and 6th grade champ. Got a messed up pinkie to prove it too. Top of the ball where the rope attached would break a finger

You had a ball?! Luxury

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know, for my entire childhood I didn’t know what you played with this. I still don’t. I’m oddly wistful right now that I never learned.

Fuckin dope game, too.

I work with elementary aged kids and this game is still popular

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

By rolling the rope around the pole mostly, you could simulate a punching bag.

A kid at my school lost a finger playing this. Went to hit the ball and hit the cord, it wrapped around his finger and he fell back.

Thanks, Obama

You guys had a rope?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So many sports involve smacking someone's balls...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I keep seeing this and expecting it to have a deeper meaning than I’m old

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This game wasn't for short people

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anyone else baffled by how hard that ball was? Why not make it softer?!

4 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

They start soft, the rubber gets hardened by being outside in the sun all day.

"What are you, some kind of Commie, Nancy?"

It built character!

There's already a softball, play that.

Saw a kid get his nose broken by a tether ball in 5th grade. The next day all of them were removed and we never got to play again.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Seems like a good way for that kid to get bullied every day after that.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I still remember that permanent smell you get from taking one to the nose.

I had a huge crush on a kid that liked to play tetherball. I’d sit just outside the dirt ring and watch him all recess.

In the UK we had a tennis ball on the end of the rope and bats to hit it so we would not hurt our soft little hands.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My school once took the balls off the tether because it was too "dangerous."

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My school pulled those and got rid of dodge balls because of all the (semi) malicious injuries.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We just had a few poles in the tarmac where the balls were once tethered. Eventually they were removed too

Kids kept sticking their tongues to them during the winter because we weren't allowed to do anything (we got told off for being cold ffs)

The game of who is taller.

4 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 3

Nah, I was short, but once I learned some skill it was an awesome game at school

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can modify rules to give the little ones a chance. Let them grab the rope, spin and release.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not really... you both stay on your side so it's not like they can reach over you to steal your hit or anything.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A tall kid can get it spinning high easier though. They've got advantage early. Short kids gotta take an angle.

The game of angles

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Its a LOT of that. I was so good at it because I understood geometry.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean it's mainly spike the hell out of the ball down and it'll pop up on the other side then just keep the momentum

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The other strategy it to aim straight for the face of the other kid. Risky but you can win pretty quick if it works.
