Apples/oranges. The automatic transmission takes one task out of the job. AI takes the job.

And there are people complaining about self-driving vehicles, though not *too* many of us, because most of us recognize how terrible humans are at it.

I'm mostly concerned about the millions of truck driving jobs lost as soon as automation is approved and a penny cheaper.

Socially speaking, we've always figured out something in the long run; barely anyone churns butter by hand, any more. But I'm sure it always sucks for the individuals at that moment. The easy solution for that and many of our other, social ills is universal basic income. Of course, we don't have that, either. 🤷‍♀️

Historically, every new technology has created new jobs to replace the ones the technology eliminates, but I think it's going to be different this time. Automation and AI, both still in the early stages of development (particularly AI), both have the potential to upend that cycle and leave millions, or even billions, unemployable through no fault of their own. How we deal with that is likely to define our future well into the next century, I think.
