Chinese multiplication method

informative

the_more_you_know

People who find this amazing, never understood math.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, they just stopped the one child policy and they're already multiplying?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

deserves to be top comment

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

American multiplication method: pull out calculator

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now do 687*958. Better get a large sheet of paper.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is this? Communism Core?

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 8

No this actually works.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

*raughs*

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'll stick with using my toes since my elementary school teacher told me not to count with my fingers.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gonna need a bigger cheat sheet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean that's cool if you're a communist.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Well, I'll be damned...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amazing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this seems unnecessarily complicated

10 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 6

No it doesn't. It does when you go to larger digits.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It minimizes actual mental math for visual learners that have trouble with abstract concepts.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

If you can draw the lines more quickly and ditch the circling and marking, you'll do this in no time without thinking too much about it

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

13*21: 10*21 = 210. 3*21 = 63. 210 + 63 = 273

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This looks like utter brilliance to me. I love it. I'm terrible with my multiplication tables but I can draw lines and count up to 15.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its one method more than we need, the one way I learned in 4th grade does just fine. Probably does fine for everyone else too.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

Explain. My 4th grade teacher sucked i guess... and it was 20sum years ago...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Those crafty Chinamen.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Turns out I don't understand math in any language.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You and me both! Hahahaha!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a very visual learner, thank you.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Ditto this meshes nicely with my ASD.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

♡ mine too ; b friend!!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is basically just a variation of the FOIL method: 13x21=1x2,1x1+3x2,3x1=2,7,3 (273). 14x23=1x2,1x3+4x2,4x3=2,11,12=2,12,2=3,2,2 (322).

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

What sorcery is this and why didn't they teach me this in primary?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You're a FOIL method.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well said!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the Chinese's is simpler and better

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Multiplication is simple. Don't need a graph system that may not work on all numbers.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

260 + 13

10 years ago | Likes 298 Dislikes 1

So many toes. I'll have to dip into 2nd and 3rd cousins to figure this one out.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You guys are such idiots, it's 283...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

"Multiplication method"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

shit this was way easier, I did 21x10 +3x21 I mean same result but yours is double as easy.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

280 subtract 7... 273

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

210+63

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least 6

10 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 0

You are technically correct. the best kind of correct!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Well, you're not wrong...

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

I'm proud of myself for doing this myself before the first set of lines stopped moving.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had it done before the lines started. I can see the value in this if you can't do it in your head. But don't force this on kids who can.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember being forced to do it on paper the "traditional" way as a kid when I was great at math.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yup, same thing

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

273

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Are we doing addition in base 10 or base 8?

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Yes.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Base 4096

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm going to need a lot more symbols....

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Username relevant

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

273!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

273! = 1.34 * 10^548

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No. 273. Not 273! No need to bring factorials into this.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

273!! (that's less than 273!)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know i failed maths no need to rub it in. XP

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Everyone is saying its harder and more complicated. As someone whos shit with numbers, this seems easier.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I know right? This is much simpler to visualize in my head.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why was I not taught this?!?! As a super visual learner, goddamn, this would have been fantastic to know...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because this doesn't teach number sense

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Next time I can't find a calculator, I'll pull out my phone, bypass it's calculator and find this

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'd probably take hours trying to just get the lines nice and straight

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're welcome.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I actually have ocd -- and those pictures do nothing to me.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Chinese shouldn't multiply anymore. Have you seen how many there are!?!?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Grew up in China, never seen this lol.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I am Chinese, I don't think from China, never heard of this, more complicated

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Yeah this japanese method and OP is a stupid ethnocentric cunt who cant you guys apart :D

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

If you're a big blind guy then how can you tell what you're typing? 0.0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Blind method.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Imma google that. It sounds incredibly cool!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

its a joke: really I type and my dog doesn't like red so he barks if there's an underlined typographical error. Super simple stuff.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Chinese here too, this is unheard of horseshit

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I believe it's vedic in origin.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's mayan

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Way to drunk for this

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

yes same

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

^too

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Grammar goes out the window as well

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yuuuup

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... I actually understand this. I've never been able to do multiplication but I actually understand this.

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Same. For some reason, it makes multiplication easier for me xD

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Because it's a simple algorithm

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Do you understand it, or do you understand how to do it?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because ur a visual learner .. This kind of teaching will quite literally transform not only teaching but people's conceptualization of math

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Unfortunately, not everything can be visualized. People who rely on visualizations will have lots of problems with some adv. math. topics.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you're a visual learner then! A lot of visual learners can have problems with more abstract concepts without visualization.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same, this is utterly brilliant. I love it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look up Napier's Bones for multiplication

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mathematician here: This is the same as the normal algorithm you were taught to use in elementary school, just with a visualization

10 years ago | Likes 727 Dislikes 10

Thank you for saying this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't remember shit. Drugs are bad.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They weren't kidding when they said people learn in different ways.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone with extreme difficulty with numbers.. this visualization technique would have helped a lot.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was confusing the shit out of me until I realized they were doing it the exact way I would do it, but with numbers and not all f-ing dumb

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Everyone learns differently and some need a more visual method, thats where this is handy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Learning images is easier than learning singular numbers, according to sience -> Better (yet more time demanding) than the traditional ways.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not mathematician here(mere mortal, actually): still kinda cool though...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not ever curriculum teaches visual algorithms for basic multiplication- we're taught numerical formulas- so this could be a big help to some

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

As someone whom can only learn by visualization this should be used more often in schools instead of calling us stupid for not getting it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"FOIL"

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

MathMAGICIAN more like

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As someone who has discalcula, and told I was simply a moron, (by teachers) I was never taught this. Would've helped.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I was taught to memorize a chart in school.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Thank you. This method would be helpful for visual learners.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And it looks less complicated as these nice animated numbers slide around the screen and magically change. But students would still have

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to regroup and cross off numbers to change them. So it's basically the same as the algorithm but with you have to draw all the lines.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Visualization is important. But there are less abstract ways to represent multiplication that really help students understand the value of

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the digits.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's like when you move to binary and hexadecimal. It works exactly the same as base-10 (decimal).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Lattice method still my preferred 'by hand' method.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This isn't exactly how I learned the lattice method. Is this how you learned it?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, but it's the same principle.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do you do online tutoring or something?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, but this visualization makes a heck of a lot of sense, pretty easily.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mathematician.. Tic Tac Tition.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the same as the normal algorithm you were taught to use in elementary school with a visualization.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another gimmick. You learn nothing from this if you are taught it by rote, which is the way most will learn it. The stupid are still stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No dude....it's clearly not the same. This method uses no "multiplication". This method uses only "addition" to find the answer.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You do know they're the same thing, right? You're just being silly. 7×2 aka 7+7

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The dots represent the multiplication.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just remember being handed a chart and told to memorise the chart. I did not memorise the chart.

10 years ago | Likes 146 Dislikes 3

yeah I was just taught to memorize math. and then they tested us on how fast we could multiply numbers and if you were fast, you got prizes

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Same, my teacher called it a monster minute. Most terrifying minute of my life. Mostly because I was the slowest writer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the chart is for 1 to 9, you need it to be able to do any multiplication

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always got the 1-12 charts and ya we were told to memorize it... my memory is no good.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never memorized the chart and can do multiplication just fine.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'm not sure we are talking about the same chart then, I didnt go to school in the US

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neither have I. And what other 1 to 9 multiplication chart is there? Base 16 or something?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did. I know everything from 1-12 pretty well but as soon as you tell me to multiply something by 13 you can go fuck yourself.

10 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 1

I remember 1-12 and 16.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same! I sped through those timed tests in elementary school. But then middle school came and ruined everything!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You just have to break it down into bits you can calculate. 16*13 becomes (16*10)+(16*3), 16*3 becomes (10*3)+(6*3), so

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

the end result becomes (16*10) + ((10*3) + (6*3)), or simply put 160+48=208. idk about anyone else, but to me this is the simplest.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is how I do it too. But I visualize weird blocks in my head so I don't lose some aspect of the calculation.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Distributive Property of Multiplication Over Addition FTW!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup exactly how I math too.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes ... But u do realize the importance of visualization in education right ?! This is a HUGE leap

10 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 13

It's not. I think it's rather confusing.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Oh, I completely agree. But people were treating it like some new, scary thing, and it's not at all. They just don't know to connect it.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

Is it bad that I was definitely taught the western way and I was able to make sense of this? It's actually really cool if you don't have...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a calculator

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not against that point

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Ethiopian "binary" multiplication method is a bit shocking when I show it to students. Much harder to connect to the decimal algorithm.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FANCY WORDS

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

You lost me after Ethiopian.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Teaching like this is going to transform not only teaching but our understanding of physics itself ... Less than 10 years

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 12

They've been teaching this sort of thing for well over 10 years. It's just less efficient multiplication.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you figure that?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

How would you not figure that!??

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Well how do you think we know stuff? We teach future generations what previous ones have learned. Changes in education change human knowledg

10 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 4

Even google does it without searching

(a+b)(c+d)=ac+ad+bc+bd=(50+6)(90+8)=4500+400+540+48=4900+588=5488 this is what happens on gif

It's sad how few people realize the significance of this kind of leap in education

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

it took me a hot second to figure that out but now it makes sense and i feel like i just had a brainsplosion. thank you :D

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd rather just use 4 seconds to figure it out with a calc

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 6

in 20 years we'll have things in our ears translating any language and automatically doing all math for us

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But will we "Netflix and chill"?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Ok

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 787 Dislikes 0

Common Core! Way of the future!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I had to explain this method to a college math tutor. She didn't understand how I did simple math so quickly in my head

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I just use the calculator that I carry around with me all the time.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You me a cell phone with a calculator app?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's right. Take that, Mr. My 8th Grade Math Teacher. You were wrong!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whoa whoa whoa, get that common core stuff out of here!!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Interesting factoid - that form of rapid approximation is what a lot of those "weird" common core exercises are trying to teach

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Distribution property! That's how I do my mental math

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whaaa? I thought I was the only one who did this!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Common Core! Way of the future!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Even easier than all this is lattice. Shame they don't teach it in the US.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They do....they make you stop using lattice after 6th grade, but you use in the grades before....

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is exactly how I do mental math. Simplify the problem and correct. I do the same with percentages.

10 years ago | Likes 225 Dislikes 1

There is so many of us.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And decimals bring it out to whole number then bring it back down.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What they should be teaching is lattice, it's a far cleaner, quicker, and more compact way to multiply than this.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We just learned a similar method for taking indefinite integrals. Its amazing how math, at its most complicated, is really just as simple.

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Yes. Much of math does look daunting initially but is often based on some simple but clever ides.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

It was the notation that terrified me initially. Like learning a whole new language. I'm still annoyed at all the dv/dt notation out there.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Its because of this mental math I got a lot of 0s in school. Could finish my Algebra 1 and 2 work in 10-15 minutes. In a near 2 hour class.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

"""Show your work""" the most frustrating 3 words I ever read/was told during school. Ugh!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah. It took a few months but I proved I wasn't cheating in any way or using a calculator. Then things just ended up getting weird.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an engineer, "show your work" was the equivalent of "take 10 times longer for no reason"

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Easiest way for me is using a calculator

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Calculators aren't magic, they would work here because this is a simple multiplication question. Have a five step word problem and your (1)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

calculator will still help, but only if you type the right questions in. You still need to picture the numbers and know how they relate. (2)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

brain will implode into a vortex sucking up all that is matter. (2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was wonderful

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
