I like it, but Italy was part of the Entente (GB & FRA) during WW1. Prior to the war they were in an alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary. But Italy didn't like Austria, and wanted to re-take some territory which A-H had. So they broke that deal prior to the start of WW1, and got in with GB and France who agreed to let them take Trentino to Trieste. One of the bloodiest conflicts of the war.

Nice post. I would just add that Japan did not surrender until the Soviet army finished crossing over from the Europe front and the Soviets declared war on Japan and were preparing to invade. So I would have added that with Fat Man.

His case was dealt with by local police and judges who would have had no clue what he'd done in the war. It was still absolutely top secret. By todays standards that is staggeringly cruel but there are accounts from friends that he was dealing with it well and was happy, hence why they doubt he killed himself. It was only a couple of years later the Wolfenden Report started the process of ending these laws.

The Truman Administration had every intention of dropping the bombs whenever the military saw an opportunity, and to be deployed as the bombs were produced. The only temporary pause was the 2nd drop happened since the 1st drop got so delayed due to weather. Russia's declaration of war sapped the Japanese High Command of any belief of a negotiated peace (Russia would mediate the peace agreement) and they surrendered before the 3rd bomb was available

Newfoundland was part of the UK at the time... which is why my Grandpa qualified for having gone "overseas" during the war. He was only old enough to join up right at the end and only made it to Newfoundland before the war ended.
Though the Germans were terrified of Canadian units.

Canada was automatically at war as soon as Great Britain declared, same as in WWI because we were legally a British Dominion. We weren't obligated to do anything other than to support the Crown, it was our own government's decision the breadth and scope that support would take

Wrong. We had no obligation or legal requirement to fight Germany. We were part of the commonwealth, but fully independent in all areas. Trade. Defense. War. International policies, etc thanks to the Statute of Westminster 1931. The only thing we chose to NOT be legally independent in was amending our constitution, as we had no legal framework in place stating how we would do that. So we kept it like that until 1982. But there was zero law or document forcing us to declare war on Germany1/

Radar was invented by the Germans in 1904.
However, the British invented an advanced magnetron in 1940 which allowed for miniaturized radar systems which could fit into aircraft, a huge advantage for pilots. Combine this with the advantages of the Dowding system, more capable ground based radars in the UK, and a high level of redundancy/swift rebuilding once bombed and there is a large disparity.

So, yes and no. Japan wasn't particularly worried about the Russians invading that soon. Russia didn't have the naval presence to invade en masse in 1945. Prior to Manchukuo, there were two camps in the Supreme Council. One favored negotiating with Stalin, one favored fighting one last extremely costly battle to convince the allies it wasn't worth continuing the war with Japan. Manchukuo showed Stalin did not intend to negotiate, and even more than the military loss itself, that convinced 1/2

It's not that they wanted to fight to the last man, but rather they hoped if it was expensive enough in terms of lives and equipment lost, the allies could be convinced to leave the Japanese government intact and allow them to keep some of the territory they'd invaded. The UK had disarmed after WWi and was frantically rearming behind the scenes. They couldn't have done much earlier. One area they were ahead of everyone was nuclear bombs. The Brits were WAY ahead of the US, but knew it would need US money, manpower and a safe location, so went to the US. A lot of the early Manhattan project stuff was British. Then after the war the US renaged on the deal and refused to share the tech, so the UK then developed its own atom bomb, which pissed off the US.

I think part of it was that we had a few Russian spies, so the US used that to deny us access to the tech we helped develop.
Certainly a more global effort "standing on the shoulders of giants" than any one country.
If it wasn't for a Brit in his garden shed the some US money we'd have far fewer inventions.
