I understand the point but I'm bald, have no real public transport options and the last taxi I was in ran over my child's foot so I spent the whole journey getting stuck into him for being a dickhead.

Depends. Dude's license plate is "TNLZZY1"? We had a great chat. If I'm drunk? Could go either way (i.e., chatty or... asleep). Mostly? Headphones are in and I'm doing my thing.

Uber driver here. Usually, I can tell if someone is in the mood for talking as I verify name, destination, ETA, etc. If they aren't down for convo, I just keep the music low and my mouth shut. Anything I do say during the trip is usually limited to trip related updates, and that's it. If they wanna talk, then I break out fun local knowledge, tell a war story or two, or have the odd meaningful conversation. Been doing this 8½ years, and I'm 4.95, so I must be doing something right.

There ya go. See, I'm alright with folks playing their own music or chatting on the phone. Plenty of drivers ask beforehand and I also ask if I need to make a quick call. I may be the one paying, but you're the one working. It's a fine balance that good drivers can suss out and it sounds like you're one of 'em.
