No their issue was that he wore it in the oval office. I would say the critique is valid but insanely overblown. A tan suit is (traditionally) too informal for a place that hallowed. The tan suit is like when Kennedy stopped wearing hats. It was a radical statement about what constituted sufficiently formal attire for the president in specific circumstances

I read recently that it was because presidents 'traditionally' only wear tan suits on happy days, and on this day Obama made a less than happy announcement. Which is a bit thin, but that was the justification I guess.
