The problem is that it was a .txt file that wasn't comma delimited - it was just lines of numbers with col. and row headers sprinkled around

I'm really not sure where the problem is... unless this is surprise that they did something useful. I could see that. Clients suck.

yeah - I'm not too surprised I didn't get my point across in the title I wrote in the wee hours of the morning, trying to salvage said data.

Yep. If it's really bad you have to go and cut the file into chucks by hand and then feed those chunks in... you can't do it all at once.
