This shallow cast-iron skillet belonged to my wife’s late grandmother. My father in law took it and kept it in the garage for several years and this is the result. Let’s make this bad boy beautiful.

The back was worse than the front.

Starting with kosher salt, steel wool, copper wool, Dawn dish soap, and a Scotch-Brite pad, I scrubbed this thing for two days.

After 1 day of scrubbing.

After two days.

Here, I worked on the back of the garage pan using the same method and materials.

Though it looked worse than the front, the back cleaned up very nice.

Here’s the front, straight out of a 24 hour vinegar bath and just before being seasoned with a combination of flax seed oil, vegetable oil, canola oil, and Crisco.

Little bit of bourbon while we wait

After one round of seasoning. I seasoned it on my propane grill to ensure I get the temperature up to 700°

Here it is after the third coat of seasoning. Can’t wait to use this bad boy now

Id have soaked it with vinegar for a while, would take most of the rust off and shortened the process.

Also when you oil it put it in the oven for a few hours at 200, then oil it again.

Angle grinder wire wheel, wash, re-season. That's all you need to do.

Now, where’s the fun in that?

This.

For anybody considering this, steel wool can remove value from antique cast iron. There are other, less damaging methods to use such as

Electrolysis (Best) and lye/vinegar treatments. Excessive heating can also crack and warp cast iron.

Should have used coca-cola

That works, too.

Why do you have bullets in your whisky?

They are drink chillers. I like my bourbon cold, but neat.

Cuz they taste better than bourbon

Wow, that’s pretty dark. You okay?

I just really like the taste of bullets

You should try Blanton’s with a single ice cube.

I'm mainly interested in daily use maintenance. Soap and a scrub brush, wipe dry, reapply tsp. oil, right?

Most southerners wouldn’t let their skillet near soap. Used kosher salt and water then wipe it dry.

But I let my dogs lick the damn thing

Agreed, no soap.

I recommend using a wire brush drill bit for cleaning. You don't have to jam on it.

I couldn’t find mine. I have one somewhere
