A crew of diver face strage event during their stay in the deep. As their work prevent them from going back to the surface, they live in submarine capsules like Cousteau invented. Also cool concept of breathing in a liquid to go explore the deep sea. Like very deep. Manga character facing the wind philosophical quote deep.
As usual in this genre, big boom nuke and muscle guy saved the day! No just kidding the extra terrestrial did all the job. Almost. Or maybe a little bit.
Anyway things got better in the end, trust me. And it was great! Young me thought Ed Harris was Bruce Willis for years. But I learned later on that he was recovering from a Christmas movie so couldn't take part in it.
You can see James Cameron already had something for the lighted bodies and creatures. Great for its time (and still is) but a remake with modern CGI (Avatar-like, not a remastering)would be a treat. No idea about the actors but I would be curious what Imgur can suggest.

I saw this film for the first time as a kid on a tiny shitty static-ridden TV in Russia... It had a profound effect on me causing me to wander about mysteries of the deep. š

I wanted to rewatch this movie and show it to my wife after we watched Mona. I was reminded of the water tentacle - which was considered pretty cutting edge computer generated special effects when the movie first came out. Sadly the movie wouldn't even come up on our Roku search.

The book that Orson Scott Card (despicable pissant) write was not a novelization of the film as such, he wrote it during filming and so it is his own take on the story with out influence of the film. It is quite good

This is probably a complete non sequitur but my now-deceased father-in-law used to vehemently claim that HE wrote the screenplay The Deep was based on, like a million years ago. And through a sequence of events he couldnāt really specify, somehow someone else got ahold of it and plagiarized it without crediting him. He was also suffering some form of dementia and made lots of wild claims. But tbh, I always lowkey wondered about this one for some reason.

The documentary is wild! There is a guy that was part of the crew there and he yells something to the akin to āI survived working on The Abyss and James Cameron!!!ā Like just so mad about the whole experience. Many people almost drowned. It was a straight disaster just from a production standpoint and the studio almost got someone killed trying to intervene and James Cameron lost his shit. James himself had a drowning scare. Itās the āMr Toads Wild Rideā of movie productions.

The movie where Werner Herzog decided they should physically haul a 320-ton steamship over a mountain, and the narcissistic lunatic main star threw fits left and right to the point Werner considered shooting him, and the tribe used as extras offered to kill the guy? Iirc he actually made a 2nd movie that was a documentary about what a catastrophe it was lmao

There is no need whatsoever for a remake. The effects hold up fine, the performances are solid. I can't imagine a modern remake being better than the original.

There's never *need* for a remake. Sometimes a filmmaker has some ideas that could make a good new take on the story, but there never was any need

Agreed, though I submit that once in a while, a movie deserves a remake because the original squandered or was incapable of reaching its potential. Take Howard Hawks's "The Thing." Well directed, competently acted, but John Carpenter's remake blows it out of the water and is much more true to the story "Who Goes There?" it was based upon.

I think it was Cameron that punched one of his dive crew. But many people nearly drowned during that movies since all the actors did their own stunts.

I concede the possibility that such a story *could* be handled well, but I have no faith that Cameron would do so, or allow a more skilled writer and director than him to do so.
It would be... The Abyss... *TWO!* Same plot. Military paranoia vs. reason and curiosity. The ailens would find a new reason to threaten humanity, who will try to nuke them again, and somebody will (almost) die to prevent it. The MESSAGE! will be blunt as a sledgehammer, the villains charicatures.
