The Room - A Nifty Little Find

The Room

For those of you who don't know, The Room is a notoriously bad movie. The director (also the main actor) mysteriously came up with $6m to fund his own movie, never answers personal questions, and has some people wondering if he's a genius who deliberately made a "bad" movie to get it famous. This thing is right up there with Birdemic. Whatever the case, it's now a cult classic with worldwide midnight showings.

Now, this is The Room's main website--in particular, the page for midnight screenings. A friend linked me this today, pointing out the horrific quality of the site design. He wondered whether the site--like the movie--was just inherently bad... or if it had been cleverly DESIGNED to be terrible. The color is awful, there's loads of typos, and you have to navigate your way past several trailers to get in.

Merchandise Page

Here's the merchandise page. Here, you can buy Wiseau-designed (ahem, "desinged) underwear (???), talking bobbleheads, and admittedly hilarious t-shirts with some of the movie's bizarre or more memorable dialogue. Again, typos are slathered all over this page, and the design is atrocious--there's five "HOME" links on the top bar, borders all over the place and so on. Again I found myself wondering whether it was deliberate.

It gnawed at me. If the site is deliberately bad, then maybe it's some hint that the movie was all a goof? If there's actual errors in the code, though, like horrific ones... Then maybe, just maybe, the movie IS just that bad. I right-clicked, and Viewed Source. I poked through, not really expecting to find much.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen... Tommy Wiseau made his movie's website himself, on his home Mac, using Dreamweaver.

Maybe The Room... really IS -just that bad.-

Final note, I hold no ill will nor mockery toward Tommy Wiseau as a person. I do hope the dude is happy and fulfilled, and I sorta feel bad even making fun of the movie. GOD SAVE MY SOUL.
