Feedback Requested

The Imgur community has proven incredibly supportive when it comes to my work around food.

This has been an ongoing, ever-evolving journey that to date has included recipe development and food writing, journalism and documentary film making, pop ups and events and tours. I have lots planned still for the future, including a homeware range of Irish products.

I have a favour to ask.

I have just changed my website over from Leviathan to James Gabriel Martin, and am in the process of tweaking the website design and content. So I would love your feedback on what you think works, what needs improvement and what you would like to see more of.

https://www.jamesgabrielmartin.com/

The recipe archive particularly will be changed to a new format like this: https://www.jamesgabrielmartin.com/recipes/fried-nectarines-with-mascarpone-mint-citrus-whiskey-syrup

Instead of the old format: https://www.jamesgabrielmartin.com/recipes/irish-stout-treacle-bread

Any thoughts very much appreciated

I need it

Not a web designer or foodie but your site is extremely nice to navigate on mobile 10/10

I dont like backgrounds!

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I licked my screen, your website tastes like dust.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The new site is many times more interesting than the older design.
I like how you’ve chosen the categories and how you’re laying out the recipes. The pictures are next level. The first taste is with your eyes, as they say.

On mobile when you are on single recipe page and you scroll to the bottom you have links for previous/next recipe. The font here is just to large. Some recipes are written in 7 rows (one word per row) which reads like modern ai captions on videos. It is a bad UX. Solutions would be smaller font or 2row div (maybe just css prop change on parent div, i cant see code on mobile) where next would be first and previous would be below it. Also scroll to top because users are spoiled.

I’m using basic squarespace which makes changes to all font sizes across the site so these issues emerge. And don’t know how to code! But it’s on my list to address thank you kindly for the feedback

Apricot preserves with honey maple and bourbon syrup over Johhny Cakes fried in bacon grease. Go for a presidential favorite from the less angina producing past, at least for the priviledged White folks, of Old Crow or Four Roses and keep an iced glass full to wash them down...

Very professional and polished. I like the simplicity of it and the ease of use. Well delineated pathways and clear, easy to understand language, recipes, design and layout. Just one thing missing. A photo you and Bram in nice quiet place, like standing outside a nice quaint butcher shop or cafe. Definitely needs a Bram moment somewhere in there. Well done. I’ve enjoyed watching your journey and look forward to seeing what’s coming next.

More Bram! Noted and thanks so much for the support always

Conceptually I like the idea, can I argue whipped feta+honey or ricotta mousse over mascarpone? To me, roasted stone fruit needs something more acidic and more savory to counterbalance. Personally I want more texture than just the pistachios. The flavors on the plate are big. A small handful of pistachios is overwhelmed. By going a little more savory on the cheese, the opens up candied pecans and dried orange peel, which adds acidity and real toasted nut flavors over just the dairy sweetness

I personally love salty and sweet together, good suggestions thank you

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What could we substitute in for pistachios?

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

While they all have their own unique flavors, nuts are pretty interchangeable in most recipes.

This is underrated

Easy to navigate on mobile, clear instructions, clear list of needed equipment and ingredients. I couldn't ask for more.
The only (very minor) criticism i could make (and I'm reaaaally nitpicking here) is that the categories sometimes starts with capital letters, other times it doesn't and sometimes only for the second word.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for flagging this, it isn’t nitpicking it’s the type of thing that would drive me insane so I appreciate it. The only thing is I can’t find examples of this, for me all the categories all show as starting with capitals

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just to avoid confusion, I'm talking about these.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for sharing. These all show to me as capitals. I’ll have to figure out why this is the case

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used Firefox. Your comment got me thinking so i checked with brave and chrome, and both of those show capital letters. so it's a Firefox thing probably.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s odd, I will flag it with Squarespace

Your recipes look amazing but we clearly have very different definitions of the word “simple.”

The site is clean as heck and easy to navigate. Feels like it belongs to a world-class chef. The names of a lot of the recipes sound kind of daunting (this from a midwestern-american whose palate is as sophisticated as a Ritz cracker) but the instructions are clear enough that I think I could not fuck them up.

I gotta ask, though, as a non-foodie: do citrus and mint really go together? I’m just imagining that vomit taste when I drink orange juice too soon after brushing my teeth.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I offe you a challenge. Try make a recipe with citrus and mint, if you don’t like it I’ll send you a free gift

Your recipe pages don't have unending information tied to stories tied to your cousin's best friend's dog.
How will I wander and scroll aimlessly when the information regarding the recipe, tools, and technique are right there, easy to read, and in such a lovely means of display?

There’smnot even a pop up ad every 20 seconds that, when I dismiss it, I have to find my place again cuz I was scrolled back to the top.

What am I supposed to do, go from step 3 to 4 without playing with my phone for 5 minutes?

3 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Too fucking right. We *need* to hear, at length and in a prose style of a pretentious teenager, about the mythical qualities of the ingredients...or how the dish is only fully enjoyed for two minutes during a lunar eclipse... or how the utensils you MUST use are fifth generation as you cannot source ivory...

I really want to know how a summer backpacking across the Andes inspired them to make cheese on toast

You mean 'Queso sobre tostada', dont you? Pleb :p

Clicked old link first: "solid, nothing wrong with it". Clicked the new: "heeeell yeah!"

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's not a picture for the link preview for the new site. Definitely is something you'd benefit from as if your site is shared through any of the chat platforms.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m trying to figure this out at present thank you!

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like it! Easy to navigate and follow. The lining up of links on the recipe page needs refinement. I didn't stick around long enough to see if the ingredients/method were non-sleep pages, but if you have that - I love you.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Could you give me an example of what you mean about links?

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

/a/apbWmL0 - they’re just a bit unaligned/broken

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Omg the new format should be the standard! So grateful for the clear, concise drop down menus, and so happy to now know about your site!

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A great way to get feedback on something like this is to give a couple people who have never seen this before a realistic task to complete using their phone (choose a recipe, shop for a recipe, cook a recipe, sign up for an event, etc) then get out of their way and observe them trying to complete that task as if you weren't there. Don't help them. Source - me, UX Researcher.

That’s great thank you!

Website dev / amateur foodie here. Looks pretty good! Definitely love the accordion design for the recipe pages, big improvement on the old version. There are one or two spots on the home page where I noticed some tiny inconsistencies in the padding between text and buttons, but honestly that's not a huge deal. There are Fortune 500 companies that put less effort into their mobile sites. 👍👍

3 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Accordion is clean but is not going to add value in this context. You're adding friction by hiding information people expect to see at this level. If you're going to break an established convention (traditional recipe layout) you should do so if it adds value to the experience. The traditional recipe format already has a clear visual hierarchy and is scannable. Accordions are great for primary navigation and FAQs, not recipes usually - UX Researcher

Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out, those inconsistencies will be cleaned up with a fine tooth comb over the next week so I appreciate the note on it. I want the site to evoke a feeling throughout use. How can I have 500 fortunes that you speak of ?

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I'd like to get a few of those fortunes myself but alas they are elusive beasts

I'm missing a "serving size" on your recipes, maybe I'm reading over it, but how many people do I feed with this? What do I need to adjust if I want to make it for 3 people, or 5?
Oh, and just as a small niggle: I like that you have ml instead of cups or whatever, but if possible also add the grams next to the tbsp and tsp amounts.

3 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Serving size is on some but I’m in the process of adding it to all so great tips

3 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Your improvements are great. Class, like Cook's used to be. Speaking of servings, allrecipes has a calculator for # that's very nice. Link<

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's just below the ingredients list. I use it a lot. Take a look? https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/220414/hot-tamale-pie/

I'm gonna give you my 'local' favorite recipe website, to a random recipe: https://dagelijksekost.vrt.be/gerechten/cheesecake-met-aardbeien-en-coulis-van-aardbei

Ingredients can be seen as a whole for the entire recipe, or per 'part' (the sauce, the meat, the veggies, the dough,...) making it easy to see what goes with what, standard serving size is 4p, but if you adjust it, everything goes up or down, you can copy the ingredient list to plain text to put in a notes app,...

That is very nice. Here's another with a similar calculator. Below the ingredients. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/220414/hot-tamale-pie/

Do know that this site, Dagelijkse Kost, is built and maintained by our national broadcaster, so there's some budget behind it. But it might give you some ideas!
