If you wrapped a clean stone statue with a dry cotton sheet, you'd never get that facial definition. The highpoint between the brow and the tip of the nose would mean the eyes would barely touch the cloth.

linen/cotton same difference as far as staining/paint/dye is concerned.

Not really. They're different enough that even the same thickness of will drape differently depending on if it's linen or cotton. Also, linen is harder to dye than cotton is, the fibers just don't absorb the dying compounds very well.
