This one in particular was built on an old Panzer II chassis if i remember right. Was a way of saving materiel.

Germans very much did have tank destroyers. Marder II, Jagdtiger, Elefant... most were repurposed mainline tanks with other guns. (1/2)

Self Propelled Artillery, designed and produced to assault positions and fortifications with high powered shells. Not tanks.

To be fair, out of that list only the Elefant/Jagdtiger could ever be an assault vehicle. Rest had no armor. They were defensive vs tanks.

Stug IIIs were excellent at an anti-tank role, but were classed as assault guns. The ones I've listed were tank destroyers

Note that I said "could ever" and not "were". Elefant was actually used in that role IIRC, even if it wasn't classed that way.
