I went to UConn about a decade before she was there, but even in the late '90s, early 2000s, the women had won more recently than the men. They had won in 1995. Men didn't win until 1998. As a student in 1998, when the women had one national championship and were considered a powerhouse, and the men were good, but a little less prestigious, I could STILL get a cheaper price per game for the women's season ticket than the men. 2 bucks a game for the women and 5 for the men.

Ok. So I'm trying to piece all this together... First, I see 10 rings in the photo. But from Wiki, I count 11 championships + 2 Olympic gold medals (which don't give out rings). She won 4 WNBA titles, 3 WCBA (China) titles, 2 EuroLeague titles, and 2 NCAA (College) titles.
It's possible there are rings there from individual honors? Or FIBA Gold Medal wins (2 Adult, 2 as a Junior)? Or possibly from winning a State title in High School, of which she won 3 of them + 1 national HS title?

Our WNBA team is the one team I don’t mind taxpayer-funding a stadium for.
When I worked in a print shop downtown, their office staff were the only sports team people were the only people who were nice to us. I think that speaks to the organizational culture.
Still don’t watch the games. But I have some logo merch and if you hold a gun to my head I’m a Lynx fan.

A lot of that is because people just don’t watch it, and therefore it isn’t promoted as much, meaning it gets less marketing funding, meaning it’s promoted even less because people aren’t watching the thing they don’t know about. It’s called a visibility paradox, and it’s only gotten worse with social media algos trending so hard into radicalising men for the right wing, which needs a lot of “MEN, FUCK YEAH” microdick-swinging content and coverage to work.

There's also another 'spiral', related to this one. They don't get paid as much as the men. Therefore, the same types will claim it must mean women are less talented. ....which keeps the salaries low, which.... you get the idea.

I don't know why you're getting down vote but it's true. The main contributors to women's sport are men and even the women's leagues are subsidized by the mens team and wouldn't be able to operate without them as they use the same stadiums and venues.

There are plenty of places and opportunities to support women's sports now so hiding behind that argument is getting old. There is almost no money in women's sport because there is no support.
People are all supportive online but have never actually supported women's sports in any shape or form. 99% have never bought a female athlete's jersey or fail to even name one.
Ronda Rousey made millions per bout at the height of her career. Way more than most men, because she had support from her fans.

The WNBA has been around since 1996, 30 years. The league is subsidized by the revenue from the men's NBA. To this day the WNBA rarely sells out, and gets terrible ratings on TV. The WNBA athletes are amazing, best in the world. You can blame men for not watching them i guess, but the women who arent watching them either. And it's a shame. (Like i said in a different comment, Bill Burr does a bit on this. The Kardasians are billionaires because women (in general) are watching them)

But even if you are really into basketball, there is a high chance you could have never heard of her, or many other female athletes.
Tennis is one of the few sports I think most could name female athletes from. Maybe Golf.

Male players don't "seem" better or more impressive - they ARE better and more impressive. Every single major "male" sport is actually open to both genders; the reason women don't participate in those leagues is because they're nowhere close to having the necessary athleticism and skill.

Not quite every mayor sport, but a lot are open leagues. Most team sports like football or handball are gender split. And from time to time you see a woman in the top league, Annika Sörenstam is a good example in Golf
