#37 I like that imgur isn't on this list.
MetaVulture
Fuck #1. I sleep as close to 8 hours as I can during the week, and on the weekend I go for 12. I don't want to be awake ffs.
Outec
#1 Admits we know very little about sleep, yet claims majority is "unnecessary unconciousness"...
Outec
Reminds me of when they used to say introns were useless scrap DNA
YourMotherApproves
GONK!
barfpony
I like how the suggested answer to "What are your strengths?" is "list your strengths"
HOOMANGUY
#1 sound like a step by step guide how to ruin your live.

#1 I've done a 1-2 hour and 3-4 hour polyphasic and it's freaking amazing.
RElGNMAN
are you an alien helping others to adapt?
YourMotherApproves
"Wild story fam but this alien I met knows how to rhyme with the word orange."
RElGNMAN
Decstorose
#3 Yeah, don't do this. FTP sucks and there are plenty of free "do-it-for-you" file server Linux distributions.
Nightcaste
#1 it's great! Right up until you have a psychotic episode!
DaNylz
Monophasic sleep has been science wise proven to be the healthiest by far.
euphoricopportunity
I've experimented with biphasic sleep, but I have liked the results. Less an intentional thing, more of a "sleep for 4 hours, wake up, mess around for 1-2 hours, sleep another 2-4 hours". Because sometimes you can just feel that trying to go back to sleep isn't going to work.
DaNylz
I totally agree there can be good individual versions. The argument that its kind of not healthy applies only to big study samples and their mean scores on certain variables.
MadamPuddifoot
#34 I ended the interview for my current job in a power move. The owner asked "do you have any other questions for us?" and I said (1/2)
MadamPuddifoot
"no more questions. But I just want you to know, if you hire me, I promise you will NOT regret it." got the offer the next day.
underestimated37
Actually looking at all of these they’re all pretty terrible clickbaity advice, I’d not trust much of any of this bs
mephiston
Chiming in with another post saying polyphasic sleep is bullshit
Nostradamuswaswrong
#1 Why...why would you want to be awake MORE?!?
andrathor
I hate sleep. I can't sleep more than 6 hours and feel rested. If I could sleep 0 hours and not die, I would.
Morkath
#1 How are you taking 20 minute naps?
ToTheUpland
Set an alarm, and don't go any longer than 20 minutes otherwise you can get super drowsy, I find ~17 minutes works best for me.
pareidoliaperson
Someone who can take a 20 min nap is also someone who sleeps well and doesn't these "tricks".
Zoroasterisk
I think you may have a word
pareidoliaperson
Yeah but who doesn't these tricks?
Beefkins
I remember a Cracked article where someone tried these and said that cycle was like torture.
Animorphs
You spend twenty minutes trying to fall asleep then get up! Super restful!
slothlikemammal
People talk about 20min naps when I need at least 60min to fall asleep so my brain can remind me of all the stupid things I've done recently
Mistruths
Well, see, part of it is that you're just so exhausted you just fall asleep immediately, because you don't have a choice.
BlueTyphoon
I'm lucky if I can fall asleep within 60 minutes. some nights it takes over 4 hours of tossing and turning to finally get maybe 3 hours.
3lv3n
Well stop sleeping in strangers beds then! We’ve talked about this before…
Animorphs
I hear ya man. It’s unreal to me.
derJake
Step 1: Don't have kids.
YoureWaifuAShit
that polyphasic sleep schedule is a good way to (temporarily) destroy your health
Strategicgnomer
First of all, anything that starts with "That's not necessarily true, we don't actually know anything about X" is code for, I'm lying
Strategicgnomer
through my teeth and want you not to look too much into it.

#40 You can have cheese, but you can’t have milk?

#1 last year I went 100% nocturnal for a few months. Awesome for me, sucked as a social creature. One day I'll go back. Full cryptid.

#7 Goddamn fucking bullshit. It’s CURSOR, not curser.
underestimated37
I’m pretty sure anyone under the age of 50 knows this stuff anyway
tzxAzrael
exactly! the -curser- sits in the chair and swears at the computer for doing what it was told to, instead of what they wanted it to do.
Imnotactuallysatanindisguise
#12 huh… Maybe I am an introvert.
Nacon
Congrats! :D

#3 is bad advice, don’t follow this guide, instead install a NAS Linux distribution with a webUI like OpenMediaVault, Amahi or TrueNAS
mephiston
There's a lot of bad advice in this post, honestly. It started out with a legitimate health risk.
underestimated37
You need less hardware and it runs faster, having a desktop GUI adds a ton of unnecessary bloat, whereas web based distros need little.
tzxAzrael
but also; very few people actually -need- a fileserver. and most of the ones who -think- they do, won't do the maintenance it requires.
underestimated37
Very true though with dedicated solutions it allows for expansion into personal cloud hosting and getting data out of risky public providers
tzxAzrael
sure, but... most of that is ~also~ beyond the typical "i want a file-server" person...
underestimated37
Yunohost does it all in a way that is so simple it’s ridiculous, even a kid could set it up, forgot to mention it earlier
NicolasKevinMac
Polyphasic sleep has been completely debunked. It's possible to FEEL rested after adapting to it; but long term, it fucks both mind and body
Bystandr
Tried it in university - 6 hours + 90 min nap (and the nap about every 3rd sleep) was as close as I could get. I tried the 6 x 20 min for 11
Bystandr
days and it made me into a zombie. Eventually it catches up, and its really hard on the mind.

I HIGHLY recommend Matthew Walker’s Why We Sleep
meskarune
Can confirm you hallucination and disassociate and become almost zombie like
Havok707
Remember Kramer tried that
16bitStarbuck
Yeah, this year I started working overnights full time and have had to deal with that. My solution is 1.5 hour intervals, so 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6
16bitStarbuck
> hours of restful sleep supplemented with naps if needed. My brain can do housekeeping and I won't be a tripped out zombie.

Good info on sleep: "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker.
Teqta
#1 Not a single reference, anecdotal evidence only, and referring to the majority of sleep as a waste? Search Pubmed to check med science.
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
"Adverse physical health". I was about to comment it's not just your brain that needs sleep. There is a lot of general tissue maintenance too
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
Plus ppl overeat if they spend too much time awake. A brain that gets no rest craves more glucose. Adequate sleep helps promote weight loss.
PirateRubberDuck
After trying working nights once, yep definitely craved glucose. Then I went delirious and left that job. I can't sleep during the day.
fedeColorTerror
Yes. Also, why would you want to sleep less? Sleeping is nice, it makes you feel good and some dreams are great.
Teqta
Conclusion - "polyphasic sleep schedules... are associated with a variety of adverse... health and performance outcomes."
MrKNRJ
the siesta and two naps work out pretty well, but beyond that can be bad
Skevoid
I went from having horrific insomnia to having enviably good sleep by using polyphasic sleep for about a month. So, maybe do?
thekeyofe
Yeah, polyphasic will work for some people, but for the vast majority of people it's a bad idea.
tzxAzrael
for a MONTH. great, enough time to kick old bad habits, and (potentially) learn new good habits. but long term? not such a good idea.
Arkenov
Seems siesta is just fine. If taking a nap helps you sleep, great. But there's no way 'hacking' your sleep is healthy
PleasantPeasantPheasant
The difference is that your sleep schedule was already fucked.
Skevoid
Oh absolutely, that's why I said maybe. If sleep is already a big problem then experimentation makes sense.
FishieStardust
If you need a false positive on a COVID test, use a few drop of soda on the test with no saline. I used Jolly Good Sour Pow'r.
Damos1
…wait, why do you know this? How did you figure this out!
FishieStardust
Needed documentation for work so that I could have some days off without using my hours. Did some googling /1

#3 - not sure why you're installing VNC if you're able to SSH into it, but if you insist...
underestimated37
It’s extremely bad advice; makes the whole process unnecessarily complicated
kuriosly
Im not sure why they are doing most of those steps... Why not just install a server distro in the first place?
tzxAzrael
because it's linux. the only correct way to do it is the way it was taught to you, and only if you were taught by >>
tzxAzrael
people with VERY SPECIFIC NOTIONS about what makes a distro good or bad. that's why you have to use EXACTLY this one and -only- this one.
