What exactly is this map showing? What do the colors mean? What color starts the gradient and which one finishes it? Am I correct to interpret circle size to correspond with intensity?

fire.airnow.gov is the site this is from. According to the legend,
Green = good
Yellow = Moderate
Orange = Unhealthy for sensitive groups
Red = Unhealthy
Purple = Very Unhealthy
Maroon = Hazardous
I'm currently in a Maroon zone, and the sky is yellow, and even after running through the building's air filters, my office smells like a campfire.
