As a current university student, I don’t think you’re an idiot if you go to university or take an apprenticeship. As long as it’s a 1/2
Practical field of work.

My son is going into 7th and I am nudging him towards the voc tech high school. He can go on to college if he wants. They have a CAD 1/2
program and he did a youth in manufacturing over the summer. I think engineering would be a good fit for him.

Jim is a straw man. Don't be like Jim.

Higher education is valuable beyond its job getting potential. This kind of capitalist utilitarianism thought is bad for society.
Well said! University should be affordable. That’s the problem.

higher educations value doesn't outweigh the crippling debt we're putting on children these days before they get a chance to start life.
Prolly should just fix the debt thing then, huh?
Then solve the actual problem, the high cost of college.

To be fair, Bob probably got his job because he knows someone. It's hard as hell to get a lineman job at the electric company.

There was an ad in the paper here last week looking for no experience needed linemen. Willing to train people willing to put in the work
One of us is the outlier. Saying as I applied for these jobs before going to college in a large metro area, I dont think it's me.

IDK, my aunt’s neighbour tells me there are jobs as far as the eye can see.

...but, but, but: there was this ONE ad in a never-heard-of rural news rag, so you're obviously wrong
but, but, but: there was ONE guy who tried in a never-named metro area, so obviously you're wrong. maybe bigstank79 had a crap resume.....
Phoenix metro. Just got out of the Army. Tried multiple positions over about 2 years. Went into LE instead.

Nashville tn was hiring. So was merryweather electric. They do a few countries south of Nashville. Tried to get a lazy friend a job.

"Paid" apprenticeship? This has to have been made by a boomer who hasn't had to try and find a new job in the past few decades.

You would be surprised what you can find when you're willing do the work.
you'd be amazed whats out there once you look at blue collar jobs.
SakeWeasel
There are paid apprenticeships. Hook up with a union. You'll start making half what journeymen do. calapprenticeship.org has info for CA.
Ad in the paper had the same exact job and a paid internship just last week here.

Okay but what about if I get a job with my degree and make 100k a year? It's not like degrees are useless. Sounds like your salty
LasciviousHedgehog
You get a bunch of these posts, usually has the phrase "learn to weld". Which is hilarious given that most of the economy is service based.
degrees aren't inharently useful or useless. many people end up with degrees they dont use though.
If you can get a job great. The problem is kids spend 4 years getting a degree in a feild that has zero jobs and then cry about there debt.
CheetoDustedMalcontent
The system tells them they will have a job while they are doing it. They don't find out until after the debt. You wouldn't do it otherwise
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
When literally every adult in your life gives you inaccurate information... how do we expect them to know better? I can't blame these kids.
