She isn't just a goddess of wisdom and warfare, she's a goddess of specifically strategic warfare. Unlike Ares who's just a god of bloody warfare, father of many war gods like Deimos, Photos, Eris, and I think Palas who are all generally bad during a war that requires more than brute force. Athena is also a goddess of crafts like Hephaestus. This cosplay is awesome and the only thing missing is Aegis but other than that, 11/10.

It's strange/fascinating to me that the ancient Athenians would have a female patron deity who's a warrior and clever, while at the same time being incredibly misogynistic. They kept women completely out of public life (except for paid courtesans), regarded the female body as inferior to the male (in all aspects), and basically just treated them as property. Out of all the Mediterranean ancient cultures, they were probably the most misogynistic.

Because reducing ancient Greek culture to simply "it was misogynistic" is to ignore the very complicated ideas of gender the Greeks had. They were misogynist sure, but women also had a role in the society that was closed off to men. For example, in the domain of mysticism and religion, women were often thought to be closer to the divine. Hence all the female priestesses, oracles and mystics.

One of the downsides to only fighting when you have to versus a society of warmongers, skill and strategy can take you so far, but experience and tenacity for victory born of a thousand battles makes for very crafty and determined Generals and Soldiers. Ares may have been the more bullheaded War God, but that doesn't mean the Soldiers who worshipped him were Less Capable when it came to the subtleties of War.

Athens and Sparta were two of the principal city-states of the era, and had Athena and Ares as patron deities. The Athenians wrote more, and more of what they wrote survived, so to an extent, this is due to survivorship bias in the writing we have from that far back.

It's important to take in context. Ovid wrote the popular retelling, and Ovid was consistently writing of the failings of the gods. The original medusa was born a gorgon - Ovid rewrote the myth to turn it into a punishment.
Ironically, a story of women being punished for rape is also, in itself, oppressive to women, as it's a story written by a man of a woman abusing power.

Athena was the god of war you prayed to for victory in war.
Ares was the god of war you prayed to for the bravery to fight a war.
Amongst the gods, that is why Ares was actually one of the weaker fighters in many myths. His whole point wasn't to be powerful and win every fight. He was their version of Captain America standing back up and going, "I can do this all day." He was meant to inspire warriors to never surrender or retreat in the face of any foe.

In fairness, Ares was NOT especially morally elevated. Your point is valid, he had his domains that were valid to respect, and courage and bravery were in his domain. But the comparison to Cap is probably being too generous - most people of the era didn't really hold him as a figure of respect or moral fiber.
He represents that war is also cruelty, panic, failure, mistakes, murder. So while never giving up WAS on his playlist, Rocky Balboa might be a much better modern parallel.
