Airbag sensors require more than one trigger to fire off. E.g. if one hits, it won't fire, just in case of malfunction. When he landed, they probably ALL triggered. Modern airbags like used in Teslas are even smarter, they assess the impact in milliseconds and fire off only the airbags needed instead of everything.
As someone who's worked on cars for 30+ years, you should educate yourself. There's a YouTube video that explains the advanced processing. Computer logic, not just multisensor triggering like your knockoff Honda.
There are 2 sensors that have to be set off simultaneously for the air bags to deploy, the crash sensor and the safing sensor. It's likely he didn't hit both but they need to be hit at speeds as little as 13-15 mph and I am thinking that drop did it.
And then it dropped, jiggled one way, jiggled the other way, and then poofed. So either there's a stupid long delay between the drop-impact and the poof, or it didn't think that drop was bad but that jiggle is. Either way, it still seems to be weirdly / badly calibrated.
And it did it's job effectively. Not deploying can be as safe as deploying. If the accident is slow, the seat belt will do the job without a problem, it's when the loads on the sensors indicate high force sufficient to overload the seat belts, is when airbags are deployed.
