That's true in the Anglosphere, but not the Hispanosphere, where America refers to the continents. There, the term for someone from the USA is usually estadounidense, though americano is technically correct in the same way that calling a scottish person british is technically correct.

As a Canadian, I've given up calling myself "American" because the US has tainted that label so badly it's not worth digging it out of the sludge and clean it off to try and use it. If identifying as a Canadian isn't enough then I am North American. Identifying with the continent is pretty pointless anyway. There's no meaningful conveyance of information that saying I'm Canadian doesn't already convey. I get that some of the smaller countries in S.America might still need to though.
