Me and @TheodoreWitchFucker met three years ago on here. I had to pull an all nighter so I started chatting with random imgurians to keep me company (something I still do today), from there we became a really annoying big sister, and a dweeby little brother duo.

The first thing I ate there was a traditional dish nick named "Fish Rooster," it's little fish baked into rye bread. Finnish people take their rye bread VERY seriously haha.

Every ladies toilet has one of these butt cleaning sinks in them. They had them in Denmark as well, so maybe it's all European countries, and I just had no idea?

Finland is GORGEOUS. All the Finns I met seem to down play how beautiful it is, but I was totally in love.

Uncle Sam found me, even in a super tiny town in Finland (Kotka).

All of the parks I visited were "living" parks, where different community groups (mostly school kids, and the elderly), knit clothes for the trees. It made everything super colorful and i'm sure really fun for the kids.

It's also totally cool to drink outside, and at these public parks. Just don't speak to strangers. Ever. I got reprimanded for saying 'Hello' to a sweet old lady.... apparently I caused her a lot of stress.

Rye bread, boiled eggs, and pickled herring is the Finnish hang over cure. It tasted.... interesting.... but I never got a hang over no matter how many long drinks I had, so hey *shrug*

Took a ferry over the Baltic and went to the Suomenlinna fortress.

There are a ton of tiny little islands across Finland and you can rent/own summer cottages on them. Super cute!

I survived shrimp and tuna fish on a pizza. Apparently these are both totally normal ingredients across the pond.

Finnish architecture is amazing! I didn't want to make the album too long, so I only put the most impressive looking buildings in, but I took about a thousand pictures of just random adorable looking buildings. It's seriously a sight to see.

I convinced them to be dweebs for a few seconds. All other Finns looked on in extreme disapproval.

Largest church in Finland.

Moose cream cheese! Tasted like little bacon bits :)

The Sibelius monument. Apparently this famous Finnish composer, Sibelius, would go on week long drinking binges while coming up with his music. As he was Finnish, I am not surprised in the least by this haha. Finns also take their extremely over priced alcohol very seriously.

Reindeer sandwich! I had reindeer a few different ways while I was over there, and honestly, i'm a big fan! It didn't have a gamey taste at all (not even the lunch meat), and had a steak like taste. Sorry Rudolph, but if I see you, it's going down.

So even though Finns avoid eye contact, and speaking to... pretty much anyone, if their hockey team wins the world championship, they get drunk, strip naked and go jumping in the fountains. When I asked my friends dad about the insanity of this, he replied with, "Well you still don't have to speak to anyone while you're jumping around naked."
Sound logic.

I survived the sauna. This might be the biggest, most sacred thing in Finland. EVERYONE goes to the sauna. As an American, I died of heat stroke 13 times the first time I went in. My friend and his parents revived me though, and actually, whacking yourself with the birch tree branches helped a lot, it was very relaxing. After the sauna, sitting outside in the cool air and drinking a long drink, I FINALLY understood why sauna is so huge, and even though I knew I would die in the heat, I went right back in the damn sauna and did it again.

Best salmon i've ever had, even better than what I ate in Alaska (though that might just be a discrepancy between the two dishes that I had, and not a fight over quality).
If anyone wants to know more, or has any questions about Finland, drop a comment or send me a pm, I love to chat!

Loved the pics but all I could hear was the Monty Python Finland song...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

HAHAHAHAHAHA how did that never occur to me???

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Something something never expect something?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't blurt out greetings and don't pinch the cheeks of the little old ladies, no matter how cute they are.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

*pouts*

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You TALKED to someone you did not know, without having an important reason to do so? You non-Scandinavians are a crazy bunch!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I SAID I WAS SORRY!

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You'd probably take a seat next to someone you don't know on a buss too!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And you probably talk in elevators!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And I talk to the people I sit next to on planes. I freaked a Finnish person out doing that. Whoops!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Haha! We usually don't think that western countries differ that much, but obviously there are some cultural differences.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Did you try the Lonkero/long drink?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

HELL YES. Best drink! I brought a few home with me :)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

After living and working in Finland for 4 years and now dating a Finn. I can say that it is one of the greatest countries I have been to.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I really enjoyed it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you enjoyed it. See you spent your time in the South. The North is just as exciting in so many different ways

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wanted to go to Lapland and find father Christmas but he said no :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is always next time. I used to live about 100 km north of Santa's Village. Lots of Snow And The Northern Lights during the winter.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes! Next time for sure.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hilarious how many butthurt dwellers have commented sex/friend zone jokes. Says more about you than them!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I think you mean that the other way around???

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Saying as a half Norwegian/half Finnish guy (family is also from just outside Kotka, yay!); if you think Finnish booze is overpriced, never

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Kotka yay! (Or actually, not much to yay about Kymenlaakso area)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Family's from Munapirtti, but haven't been there in almost 10 years now.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

visit Norway unless you wint the lottery.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Norway is so expensive! I remember I caught the ferry to Tallinn & I didn't realise people went nuts & bought so much alcohol on board!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, yes, the ferry from Norway to Tallin! You baiter, you!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh no I meant the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn. But Norway was more expensive.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol I just won't drink alcohol in Norway then, because I'm DEFINITELY going to Norway. Kotka was the cutest!!!

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It is lovely in Norway, absolutely. Its just wicked expensive

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Next time I venture that far our I want to do Finland, Sweden and Norway. Lol I'll start saving now.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I need to move to Finland so people won't talk to me

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Until I come back again and then I'll talk to you haha

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

TARJOSITHAN HÄNELLE SALMIAKKAI!!

Olitko niin hölmö, että panit peliin koko elämän?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

En sentäs! Menneisyyden virheistä on opittu.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I don't know Finnish but I think you're talking about the salty fish poo candy....

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Salmiakki, aka Salty liquorice :)

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I hate the salty fish poo candy! Though your chocolate is a million times better than ours!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You should try different kinds. Lakritsi is also good, try if you haven't.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've tried a few kinds. Hard candies, and soft ones covered in sugar, and even a pear salamakki, and hated them all. Sorry :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fazer uses fresh milk instead of milk powder, so that's why its awesome :D

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I REALLY wanted to visit the fazer factory! We ran out of time though :(

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's an acquired taste, you eventually get used to it! Alternatively you end up hating it for the rest of your life. 50/50, even for Finns!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Every Finn I met loved it. I can just eat the rest of the candy haha.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Salty fish poo candy = suolainen kalankakkakarkki, gonna use that, thx <3

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lmao I do

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Elaborate on these but cleaning sinks.... also congrats on the sauna.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't use it lol. My American instincts said "fuck that"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You turn the water on in the sink, adjust and test by hand the perfect temp., then use the bidet shower on your butt, above the toilet bowl.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And the switch from sink to the shower is controlled by a pressure trigger on the shower handle

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love these stories! I want to make friends with someone in a cool country! The state's suck.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Right!!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

This is a great post. Maybe one of greatest post in the history of great posts. Ever. Really great post.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Awww thank you!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cheers from finland @op ! Hope you'll revisit!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Hell yeah I will! The next time I'm thinking of adding Norway and Sweden as well!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There is a Sibelius Institute in Finland. Most of the guys in Apocalyptica went there. It is I guess like Juilliard in a way.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cool!!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

WHAT THE HELL IS A BUTT CLEANING SINK? I mean, is it originally designed for this purpose??

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Modern world at its best.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

we have been using bidets for over 40 years

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A bidet is used when you get a sticky poo that requires endless wiping, tbh i didnt think that was 1 in pic just a sink cuss persepective

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes! HAHA I was amazed and had to ask his mom.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Please tell me me you two are married now!?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

^^^^ That. Also, found another Finnish person!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you are the woman and you are *not* Finn, yes? For some reason I am confused.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am the woman, and I am not Finnish. I'm from the US, he's from Finland, I like to travel, so i'm the one that went out there :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe I should have said that YOU were the annoying little brother.

9 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 1

Was that ever in question? ;)

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I don't know who you are, but I like you!

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It'll be fine! Just go anyway, it's a great experience.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Well you still don't have to speak to anyone while you're jumping around naked" Well I can't fucking argue with that, lol. Wise man, he is

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I was in Helsinki for four days and it was probably one of the coolest places I've ever been to. Do it!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Minnesotan here with Finnish ancestry. I love a good sauna!! It's been a while since I've taken one, though... :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It killed me, but was awesome in the end!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lol have you ever done sauna-swim? Where you sit in the sauna for a while, and then go jump in a pool/lake?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mitä hittoa? Suomi kuvissa, eikä löydy keneltäkään vielä "SUOMI MAINITTU! TORILLE!"-kommenttia. olen pettynyt :(

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

Ei helvetti, Kotkan torilta vielä :O

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry I don't speak Finnish :(

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Whenever Finland succeeds at something, they gather at market square to celebrate. Now Finland has been noted on imgur, so.. TORILLE ->

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah ok cool! I'm keeping my clothes on though. I even went to the sauna with a towel lmao.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not your fault, but us finnish people for not commenting"SUOMI MAINITTU! TORILLE!"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Judging by the comments, apparently a guy and a girl can't just be friends anymore...that's news to me!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right? Ah well. There might come a day when I care about what others think, BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ditto XD you do you! You're rocking it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shrimp and tuna pizza?? With mozzarella cheese? I'm intrigued

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Adding de-shelled mussels to that too, and oh man it's a seafood pizza heaven.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yummmm!! Welp, I guess I'm planning a trip!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...or a pizza cookout party on the weekend! \0/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also a good idea!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The shrimp was better than the tuna, but neither were as bad as I imagined

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Helsinki is the capital and super gorgeous, but I also loved their small towns, the while place has good vibes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you! I think I'll stay in Helsinki and its surrounding towns

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Porvoo is 45min drive from Helsinki and looks like so: Also Nuuksio national park in Espoo for natural beauty

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, I hope I'm able to go. Also is likely that I'll hang out in Espoo!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on what you are interested in. Nature? Go up north. City vacation? Helsinki, Turku, Tampere... For starters.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think I only will be able to stay in Helsinki and the surrounding area, thank you :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Helsinki has some wonderful outdoor places to see, lot of historical sites, shopping and nice old market halls and nice restaurants :)
