Once again proving the adages:
"You are what you eat"
and...
"Food is the best medicine"
and...
"We spend our youth sacrificing our health to earn money, just to spend all of that money to recover our health"

Remember that diet got rid of the absurd amount of refined sugar they normally ate.

Is it the magic of fruits and veggies? Or is it that a child with proper access to fresh fruits and veggies also has the support and stability in their life for good mental health?

Good to hear! Sounds like a thorough study then.

I vaguely remember hearing somewhere, that "5-a-day" was chosen as the amount of fruit and veg people could be convinced to eat. As obviously the more fruit and veg and less nuggies and fries the better.

fries are vegetables

You're correct! :) The current recommendation is 10 a day: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2122064-you-should-be-eating-10-pieces-of-fruit-or-veg-ev">ot-5/">https://www.newscientist.com/article/2122064-you-should-be-eating-10-pieces-of-fruit-or-veg-every-day-not-5/ >> https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/feb/24/meet-people-eat-10-portions-fruit-vegetables-day

It might be missing a fundamental point here that a parent who cares about their child's diet, probably also cares about their mental health and communicates properly with them.

Clearly that helps too but there are clear connections between our gut microbiomes and mental health. Veggies feed it, and processed foods kill it: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/07/08/1186092825/studying-the-link-between-the-gut-and-mental-health-is-personal-for-this-scienti feeling sick can also contribute to poor mental health: https://news.llu.edu/health-wellness/turns-out-your-gut-feelings-are-real-how-gut-and-mental-health-are-connected

It also goes both ways: people with poor mental health want junk food.

also, some places are way more expensive to buy fruit and veg than others, so it could also be a bit to do with money and being well off
