Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series

During the winter break from school and before the spring term starts sometimes we find that we have watched all the shows in our Netflix queue. Do not despair Imgurians, I have the solution; read a boooook! I know this form of entertainment is slightly archaic and antiquated but after you brush off those 2nd grade reading skills it can be quite fun. So here are some good books to get lost in. First up is the "Wheel of Time." Action, adventure, murder, war, romance, politics, and a plethora of other things fill this 14 book series from start to finish.

Book 1

Now 14 books sounds like a lot but if you make it through one, you'll be hooked. A fun fact is that Robert Jordan, the author, was friends with J. R. R. Tolkien and they used to collaborate together on fantasy stories but approached them quite differently. If you need something more mainstream and shorter though, read on.

Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series

Now this series is 13+4 books long so it does not lack for in volume but in terms of pages it is shorter than the WoT. Now this series focuses more on a couple of characters rather than a multitude of them and is a little more on the nose in terms of the "Hero" and the "Villian" but it still very good.

Book One

Now I know if you are still reading you must have some interest in books and to that I commend you but if you are still thinking that this is fantasy nonsense is for pimple faces middle schoolers and people who play D&D I have a few more options for you.

Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series

Best thing King has ever written. If all of his stories comprise the galaxy then the Tower series would be the nexus. Characters from his other novels make apperences here, some even become secondary characters and there are a great many references to his other books.

Book I

At just under 250 pages the first book of 7 is a fast easy read and if you don't fall in love with it then it probably isn't for you. Dark Tower has lots of fantasy, sci-fi and horror so it is unlike anything you've ever read. These characters still feel like my friends because King really makes them come alive unlike anything you've ever experienced.

I know you've seen the movie

While Matt Damon did a fantastic job bringing this book to life on the big screen I'll still embrace the ancient cliche, the book was better. Way more intense, a lot more jokes and the scientific mumbo jargon is easy to understand and will make you walk away at the end thinking "yeah, I could be an astronaut."

Richard Phillips "Rho Agenda"

Technically this is "teen" fiction but it's more mature than Hunger Games and Twilight. Lots of really cool quantum theories and strange alien tech. It's a fast read and leaves you very satisfied at the end, just like a high priced Vegas hooker.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Not everyone is a reader but I think everyone can enjoy a book. They make you smarter, they allow your inner childhood imagination out to play and after you finish the book you get to look down on your friends with an undeniable air of superiority so everyone wins. I have some other recommendations and I would love to hear from anyone that's read these books. Downvote and Upvote at your liesure and may the force be with you.

Edit: WOW! Thanks everyone for the Most Viral status. Since this has been received so well I will be doing at least a part 2 and maybe 3 depending. If you have something you love to read that isn't in the comments inbox me and we'll get it up. Cheers.

awesome

Ah yes, Terry "You know what's cool? Rational Actors kicking childrens jaws off because that makes me hard" Goodkind.

I can recommend most stuff by Peter F. Hamilton. The Commonwealth saga and the Armageddon Cycle are great book series (sci-fi)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Recently read those books. Couldn't put them down. CHARECTER DEVELOPMENT WAS AWESOME!

Upvoted despite the gross lack of Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss.

Well the last few books of the Wheel of Time are by Sanderson.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yaaaas the Wheel of Time!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wtf is wrong with playing D&D? Also, some of these suck.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

If you like a series that's awesome as a whole, go for The Wheel of Time. If you really dig rape, go for Terry Goodkind.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Having experienced it (tmi sorry), oh sure people are being tortured & murdered in droves but oh no! Not that! Not a willy! My biggest fear!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And of course it is in itself bad, so it's also like hey, experience it. Then see how romantic it is to tout about it every page.

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

the new Jim Butcher book is pretty good. Aeronaut's Windlass... a lot of fun.

Good to hear! I have it, but I haven't started it yet.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I love Emma & Sense and Sensibility

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same! I had to read Persuasion this year in my writing class, and now I'm hooked on her books

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Love the Dark Tower series, but, it's not better than The Stand, IMHO.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

diehard Dear Reader here, and of course i agree with you. The Stand is The Stand, man. but for sci-fi or fantasy fiction, DT series wins.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

seems like this list had a genre of sci-fi and fantasy...The Stand is for people ready to make the official leap into horror/dystopia

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Note: Terry goodkind blatantly rips off wheel of time. I recommend Guy Gavriel Kay instead. Tigana and Sailing to sarantium are brilliant

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yisss, we are pleased at this offering. Long have we sought a suitable heir to the resplendent works of GRR Martin and Dorothy Dunnett.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tigana is a MASTERWORK of fiction. In one book he Kay takes you into an ENTIRE WORLD.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

eh. that whole genre tends to follow the same tropes, plot structure, themes etc. you can still love it though

Old man's war by John Scalzi!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

FANTASTIC SERIES OF BOOKS!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Old Man's War is one of my all time favorites.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of my favorite series. I really hope he writes more in that universe

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes this! (I also loved Scalzi's Redshirts on audio, it was as funny as Douglas Adams' Dirk Gentleys Holistic Detective Agency.)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heartily dislike Terry Goodkind, but maybe I just have different tastes. He's too into his Ayn Rand inspired philosophy spoken through

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Richard's fight against the big bad communist and whoever else seems to represent politically lefty folks.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wheel of time. Fuck yes! Finally!

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

I read them straight through until l got to book 9 or so then lost interest after a few years waiting. I'm building willpower to start over

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't bother, it only gets worse. Spoiler Alert, Good triumphs over Evil.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed the Black Company books by Glen Cook. They eventually went into a bit of a weird direction, but the first few were great. [1/2?]

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Black company was called the vietnam war on peyote, by the guy who wrote the malazan book of the fallen.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've read the first one and never went back for the second, but it's on my list of things to read. Completely loved the first one though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

An omnibus edition called "The Chronicles of the Black Company" covers the first major plot arc, i.e. the first three books. Worth it!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's dark fantasy centred on the exploits of the titular mercenary unit. The setting is somewhat creepy, helped in part by… [2/?]

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

…the way Cook establishes the world (or doesn't, as it may be). The characters are memorable and morally ambiguous both. Good stuff. [3/3]

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Try the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. It's an enormous commitment, but so worth it.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You know, I know she had some messed up ideas about sexuality, but it wasn't until I started reading about her online that I really saw 1/

anything suggesting about how... "oldfashioned" her ideas were. There were troubling bits (like the green dragon riders), but at the same 2/

It's especially noticeable in the audio books read by Marsters, due to the tone he uses. Same tone, every single time.(2/2)

I'll give you that. Apparently Harry's life is just full of beautiful women.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I really wouldn't mind so much if he could only discover another synonym for pretty. Still love those books dearly, though.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I need the next one in my life. Harry's life is finally.. well.. kinda going his way.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True. Though in fairness, most of them are supernaturals for whom beauty is a predatory mechanism to distract humans from their danger.

I need this shirt in my life.

My thought exactly! Who else is riding Sue around Chicago?!

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Also, I might actually like the Codex Alert more.

YES! I DON'T AGREE BUT I LOVE THAT SERIES!

YES! I DON'T AGREE BUT I LOVE THAT SERIES!

I read it. It was neat, but I'd rather Butcher spend more time putting out more Dresden books.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I just got the first book of his new series for Christmas.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I was unaware he had a new series. Thank you

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Aeronauts Windlass. Am enjoying muchly, feeling like my big ginger cat could be a buddy of Rowl.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

now that I have upvoted you and ever reply to you, I feel like I can move on with my life - good on you for knowing good shit

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funny bit: only reason I knew of these books is because I started playing the TAbletop RPG for them. Then I read all the books. In a month.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found the books because of the awful SciFy series... now I've read everything he's published and he's one of my top 3 authors

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

never played the game, though - I don't know anyone else who would be interested... that's right - be sad for me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You might be able to find people wanting to play online. That's what I did.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WoT is fantastic and if you like it try The Stormlight Archive by Sanderson. Also the Darksword Trilogy is a good read. One of my favorites.

10 years ago | Likes 180 Dislikes 2

I name my programming projects as Stormlight characters: Project Shallan, Project Dalinar, Stormlight Engine, etc.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Only gripe I have about WoT is the length of everything. That and Sleete's tiny role in the final battle.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started the WoT series and had to pause several times to just enjoy the writing itself.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just finished what's out of Stormlight and moved onto Sanderson's Mistborn series. The man knows how to write good fantasy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I'm finishing book 11 of WoT right how and will need something to fill the void when it's over :)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Read The Black Company. Just as fun in different ways. Also it's another series to get attached to.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WoT sucks. Specifically the ending. The rest is pretty good. And read anything by Sanderson. He's great.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Anything by Sanderson is amazing. Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series is good and Night Angel. The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If you like books where the protagonist is a terrible person 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Also, any more recomendation for something in similar settings?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WoT is amazing, and I just bought myself the Mistborn trilogy as my Christmas present to myself! Can't wait to start reading it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Enjoy...it gets slow but push through...we'll worth it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Going to try Darksowrd Trilogy, never heard of it before, i guess it wasnt translated from english and im missed it ;)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Darksword Trilogy is Weis and Hickman's best work, but their Death Gate is quite good as well. But I don't think anything beats the 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. Gurgi! 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love Weiss and Hickman. They do great work separately and together. Darksword has to be their best work.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anything Sanderson

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 3

Love his superhero series. Honestly, I think I've read everything he's written. There was maybe one that wasn't wonderful.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favorite is Mistborn series

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Loved those books...the ending got me

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got depressed for about a week after the ending.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Original trillogy, or everything to date? I can't get past The Alloy of Law... just doesn't feel right without Vin.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Original trilogy. New one is just something I read because it's based on the old one... Buuuut I'm kinda liking it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seconded all day fucking long.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The first 6 WoT books are fantastic. The last 5 are the worst ever! Fuck all happens apart from swishing dresses and angry stares.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I started reading WoT, but it seemed like a blatant copy of LotR so I lost interest. Does it get better?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You. I like you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't kill me for this, but as good as the writing is, up to half of book 2 I'm hating almost every character in WoT. Do they get better?>

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

>Everyone's so prejudiced and whiny over something it seems. I'm going on because so many recommend it, but so far I'm not hooked.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried to read WoT. Got as far as bondage lesbian island before I gave up on disgust and read better lesbian bondage books.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Um...I'm having real trouble knowing what the fuck you are talking about with "bondage lesbian island"...?!?! I read all 14 and don't recall

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I must have skipped that book...I should go back

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm at a loss, the only islands I can think of are the sea folk isles and Tar Valon...and I'm not sure how Aes'Sedai qualify....

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seanchan or whatever? With the magical leashes?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ohhhh, that's not an island it was more lik a continent, and they did that because they considered anyone that could channel an animal.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahh, yeah. The series was wearing thin for me already at that point, and then it got way too fetishy and that was the last straw.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I respectfully disagree with your opinion about WoT. Found the writing and characters to be horrendous. First book is by far the best.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I thought it was alright but I got tired of braid tugging and Rand angst after about 7 books.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got Stormlight Archive as a christmas present. I'm totally hooked after 200 pages!

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

They are soon good...he's my favorite sonfar

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*author at the moment

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

have you looked into the connections with the cosmere? Google it. It'll blow your mind.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If this means what I think it means, it took me a while to really get into it as well. Once I did however, I was hooked.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was astonished how much I loved both the books. I really want to buy a print of Shallan on the Cliffside that is on the inside of WoR

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

200 pages? Just you wait..around the 500 pg mark it is non stop awesomeness!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Does the author have a similar writing style as Robert Jordan? With all his really detailed descriptions of things that last for pages?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

you can see the difference but not to much and not for the worse. now about Sanderson own books.. yes, it's a bit different, but it's great!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I read the three WoT books that he wrote, just nothing of his own. I've been meaning to find a new book to read but can't find (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

anything quite as descriptive as Robert Jordan. I just loved his writing style!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

gave him like half a book with the info related to that village, like whole family history of the peasants. hard to emulate hahaha (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that will be hard xD. I read that when he got the job and asked Jordan's wife for some notes about some remote village the wife(1/2)

Stormlight Archive Ruined Me!!! WHY MUST I WAIT FOR ANOTHER BOOK!!!

10 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

Just one more added to the list of waiting for sequel :( Game of thrones, Kingkiller chronicles and stormlight archive.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least Sanderson writes fast and a lot. Could be another Rothfuss....

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean wait for eight more books

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For 1000+ page books, he's cranking them out like books are going out of style. Be thankful, he could be like GRR Martin or Patrick Rothfuss

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, he's regularly updating all of his series' so that a new book comes out about every 6 months.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So true!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just wait until you realized that most of Brandon Sanderson's books take place in the same "Cosmere" and that characters hop worlds

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Wait, what? I've read almost all of them and have not picked up on this. Well, time to read them all again

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It has been very subtle so far. Most of the world hopping happens in the interludes or the little tidbits as the start of each chapter. (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also Hoid/Wit is the most obvious of his characters who hop. There are others like Zahel who is from Warbreaker.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only one character hops so far, but yeah, shits gonna get fun.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Oh my young naive friend. There are so many world hoppers. You've met one in mist born, another in elantris, several more from storm light.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And several more from books he hasn't written yet, or are world hoppers from worlds we've seen, or are a main character in one book and a

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

More than one character hops. Hoid is just the obvious one.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I thought Hoid was the only confirmed one so far. Who else is there?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But yes super fun!!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Read Sanderson's Mistborn stuff too. I really love the newest 2, the "westerns"

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I can't get into the new two. Doesn't feel right without Vin.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes!! Elantris by B. Sanderson is really good too!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two? Wtf theres a new book?!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Shadows of Self, another book about Wax & Wayne.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah and another one coming out in a few weeks.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bands of Mourning, for those looking.

More weird west than steampunk

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah okay gotcha gotcha

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
