I have called and called and called and called and argued with these people for hours at a time. I pay for 50mbps and this is the fastest I have EVER seen. I know that I won't always get the highest speed that I'm paying for, depending on the time of day and what not, but my normal speeds range from 2 to 6mbps down and 1 to 3 mbps up. First thing this morning, with everyone else getting ready for work, I took this.
The customer service with these people is terrible. Do the employees know that their company is hated? Do they not care? I go into calls in a calm and respectful manner, I tell them my problem, and they throw back a rehearsed line about busy servers, peak hours, I should use their WiFi instead of my Nighthawk Router. I explain that I did used to use their built in WiFi but they charged extra for it and it was worse than my Nighthawk. At least I can get signal in my whole house now.
They offer to wave the fee for six months, completely ignoring the fact that I complained about the range on it as well. They "resend the signal" to the modem and it'll be better for a day or two, but then we're right back to the same problem.
This is an actual Spectrum executive sitting in their office, up until four days ago. #fakenews
I have been calling Grande Communications every week for about six months to find out when they were expanding to my side of the city. They would always tell me "soon, but no final date is known." Obviously they had to fight and argue with Spectrum. Grande offers speeds of up to 1gbps. That is insane!
I had seen their trucks in my neighborhood for the last two months, then a week ago they stopped showing up. Thought they were gone on Christmas break. On Saturday, I checked my mail and had a letter from Grande! They were offering me new service! I called and scheduled a set up.
Today is the day. When I woke up, this was my first thought. They'll be here sometime today, I don't mind the "between 8 and 12" thing. I'm a lazy fuck anyways.
This is the first test. The installer just left, and I'm very happy with the results. My wife has the television that she wanted so I can now game without having to worry about sharing any of my precious internet with her Netflix. Nice. It took the guy just over 6 hours to run all new wires and get the stuff set up, the first box that he tried using for the television was a dud, so he had to go get a different one.
JeffGodofBiscuits
MrSlushie
I have spectrum and get about 1 to 5mbps more than I pay for and very rarely drops bellow 200
ThatDiceGuy
Well @OP did you do a wired or WiFi connection?
SoCloseToCalamity
It's WiFi
shinagami091
I have spectrums 300mbps and I get 364. Feelsbadman
chiphimjo
Spectrum upgraded their speeds in nc even offering a gb speed to compete with Google and att. I do agree ccs sucks but techs are good mostly
shinagami091
I used to do tech support for spectrum internet and I’m curious about a few things. Time of day isn’t a factor these days.
shinagami091
Were those initial speed tests done on a wired or wireless connection? What speed did you sign up on Grande with?
cyno01
On spectrum too, im sure their customer service is shit, but i never have to call them about anything. Pay $45/mo for 60/6, get 120/12. :-/
ProbablyDrunkAgain
I have better than this with Spectrum. Must be where you live.
JEMbalaya
I also have spectrum. Other companies supply this part of town but only spectrum is allowed in my apartment complex. Pay for 100 get 50
frog311
As an Australian, with our fastest network. The glorious NBN. We have a grand total of 2.5mbs. I understand your pain
tomalt
My FttN connection went down for SIX DAYS because of a "Faulty battery" WTF and a corroded join in the line. NBNco are dicks.
skrimpypimpy
Yeah, I was thinking the first pic is decent speed in Australia.
SomeFurryTrash
Nbn plans are just so fucking expensive
TheGrapeVines
we are installers of fixed wireless and skymuster satellite nbn. I have so much dirt of the delivery partners. I hate nbn SO MUCH.
RuKosopaty
If they dont care about their clients then I doubt they care about employees and if employees are treated like shit why should they care?
Elviondel
You're lucky! WE pay for 50 and have averaged about 3 for years, and our ISP's regional headquarters are about 5 minutes from our place!
boobs675309
Vote for politicians that promise to do some anti-trust regulations against these assholes.
ITryToOnlyRespondInGifs
But I thought regulations were the devil!
dsflyer
The law is supporting the cable monopoly. It's not an anti-trust thing, it's set up this way for utilities. Repeal the cable utility laws!
jadespider
anti-trust controls didn't solve this problem though, the free market expanding to fill a consumer demand solved it.

McCh333zy
Funny how in Austrlia the slow speeds you guys complain about are the speeds we fight for.
YourNewStepDaddy
I get my internet directly from space. It involves a lot of tinfoil and duct tape. And i have to keep the microwave running constantly
TheSpectrumGuy
Soooo I'd probably be hated but I'm just gonna say I'm sorry that you got a shitty deal, feel free to message me if you need anything answer
Evilgojiberries
Oh hey. Goji remembers you.
TheSpectrumGuy
Heyyyyyy what's up man, how's NC
stickyexportpanda
And here I'm sitting with my 600/600 fiber connection out in the Danish country sipping on a beer and being neutral on the net
hexster
Shit I have Spectrum -- this is what I'm sitting at here in Austin
jbcars4life
What's up with the huge drop from down to upload??
nioman86
Asynchronous connection with that speed, Cable connection?
Daruni
Make sure to do speed checks with fast.com instead of speedtest.net. ISPs fast-track speedtest to give padded results.
WallpaperProblems
Just as I always believed thank you
NoItsACardiganButThanksForNoticing
Spectrum tech was just here sunday and he was using fast.com to check for my 1gb connection. I thought it was weird
Anonawesome
Works off netflix's servers, so they can't fastlane fast.com without fastlaning netflix. Fucking genius company tactic.
DankaliciousElkBrew
Underrated comment here
Mezamete
Wouldn't that have been illegal until this recent net neutrality repeal?
Daruni
Not necessarily, because all they were doing was fast-tracking speedtest rather than throttling
PrisonDonkey
Just checked mine. 80Mbps
tehcron
When you need to test something specific, select a server closer to what you are having an issue with.
Stagnantnation
Pretty large spread between all these. 100ish on speedo">">speedof.me, 634 on fast.com, 927mbits on speedtest.net. 1gbps service, not many up that spd
Scarytherapistguy
I'm a cable technician who does at least a 100 speed tests a week and there's no difference between fast.co">.com">fast.com and speedtest.net in most cases
Daruni
Interesting. Every test I've done on various wifis always are different, with speedtest numbers being much higher
buttsGameVoter
The point is that there shouldn't be; if there is then your ISP is either throttling Netflix or prioritizing Speedtest.com (or both)
BloodyTanookiSuit
Just checked mine. 227 at Speedtest and 230 at fast. I just wish I could get a higher upload without paying hundreds a month.
buttpunch13
Mine is always faster on fast by Netflix by a lot. But I thought the argument is that it shouldn't be.
NoSlack913
Just tested. 92m on fast. 55 on speed test.
buttpunch13
Mine was similar but the argument is suppose to be that the results should be switched. This just proves that Netflix is wrong.
stuey909
(1) I know i am getting more accurate accurate with speedtest.net based on the speed of my actual downloads.
stuey909
(2) My isp is a non profit organisation run by the community though so they wouldn't fast track.
BeendrinkingComebacklater
Speedof.me is also a reliable source although I've never personally witnessed 'padding' with any ISP also where I currently live only -
BloodyTanookiSuit
Speedtest and Fast both report ~230 for me, but speedof.me says 27
BeendrinkingComebacklater
Charter is available & I pay for 200Mbps and I actually get around 240Mbps +/-
Alvatore
Spectrum says I'm signed up for 100Mbps. Speedtest and Fast both say I'm getting around 105-110, but speedof.me says I'm getting 58Mbps. Hm.
TrustyFart
I always get WAY faster speeds on fast than on speedtest. 130 on fast, 24 on speedtest
larsmaehlum
HorseHeadMonster
I hate you.
larsmaehlum
fireking50
You forgot to mention that you are speedtest, testing your speed to your own server right next to you.
WeaselTheOtterYouCantTrust
Google Fiber?
shinagami091
Looks like it. They’re the only ones that I know of that offer 1gbps up and down
larsmaehlum
I’m in Norway, most fiber providers will offer 1gig up/down if you’re willing to pay.
shinagami091
0 ms? Was the server you were pinging in your house or something?
larsmaehlum
Haha. The speedtest server is in Oslo, 80 miles or so away. But I think the ping part glitched somewhat.
Radionactiveman
larsmaehlum
shtposting10101
Is such a thing even possible?
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
Yes, when you sit right next to the test server and are hooked up over 10Gig Ethernet.
larsmaehlum
1 gig ethernet, 70-80 miles to the test server.
Cheomesh
Bitch, it might be.
Gronsak
In Sweden ISPs have to deliver at least the advertised speed thanks to a bunch of strong consumer protection laws and 1Gb/s is quite cheap
larsmaehlum
This is in Norway, just outside a small town. Not that cheap though..
Gronsak
Well cheap is a relative term
jbcars4life

These are the same speeds I see with Fios gigabit. It costs me about $80/mo

I had time warner prior to the take over by Spectrum. They advertise 100up but only offer 50 in my area but with Time Warner i had 70up sigh

SoCloseToCalamity
Yeah, I had TWC since 2013 and it's been a struggle every day with them. I wish you luck in better internet, friend!
shinagami091
Time Warner has never offered anything more than 30 upload anywhere on residential service. Or were you meaning down?
Funred
I ran a speed test at my brothers house and this was the result. i died a little inside.
shinagami091
Who is his isp? AOL?
thedadwhobeatshiskidwithjumpercables
RuCathyes
I like spectrum. Well, I like them infinitely more than at&t because att just sucks wiener hole.
tripodGod
Why the at&t hate, and where are you located? Just moved to Wisconsin and have the option of Att or Spectrum
FLockwood
Which spectrum so you have. Charter spectrum has almost never gone under 100mbps for me... The only other internet were the asshats at at&t.
g0li0nz
Same, never seen it below 100
CakeIsLegit
Same, was at 20 with TWC, when they merged I went to 100 same cost
MandaloreTheDefiler
@OP does my internet make you feel better?
jbcars4life
I'd honestly be fine with yours for all I really do with it. I'm struggling with <0.5up & down
SoCloseToCalamity
Yep!
SaraSlaughter
Spectrum is the fucking devil. The have a monopoly here too unless you go with a dish, which no one wants to do in six months of snow.
FustyLugs
Ask anyone and every provider is shit for one reason or the other..
PandaPolice24
How did pricing compare?
SoCloseToCalamity
It's cheaper than Spectrum by $20.
meenagetutantneetleteetles
How much do you pay now?
ProperSouthernGentleman
TehButternaut
Is it fiber?
Poopoopeepeevagina
.
SoCloseToCalamity
Nope. They have a fiber option but I felt like that was overkill for me.
clucja1
overkill for now. In a few years when your getting 4k video streaming or better than that fiber would be nice. If possible future proof
HotPocketMemes
It probably is. I have 110mbps down speed and find a lot of sites wont provide at nearly my down speed
RatElemental
Are... are they only in one region? I need to know where to move if so.
SoCloseToCalamity
I believe they're just Texas but only certain parts. www.mygrande.com
kurooshikioni
Is it really that bad in America? In UK here and I pay for 40/10 and get 36/9 97% of the time I've tested at £29.99 including line rental.
iMiniBiscuits
Oh lucky you, what part of the country? NW pay for 60/20 get 2/0.2 for £80~/Mo
AthosBrewDude
Yes, our internet provider options are GARBAGE
Alvatore
$85/month gets me claims of unlimited 100Mbps down/5Mbps up and VOIP phone.
Omnomster
I’m in MN, paying for 60 down, dunno about up. I’m getting 65.3 down and 5.8 up. $45/mo and I’m on Charter Spectrum.
WinstonSmith101
Same
123angelsandairwaves123
$85 US for 125 down/25 up. West Michigan
fav605
I have Verizon Fios and haven’t had any issues. I just upgraded to gigbit, but see 900/880mbps on wired devices.
HalifaxSamuels
Shit, I have Spectrum. Your first upload speed is about my max upload, but I'm constantly hitting the max 130 down. Wish my up was faster.
halborski
I also have Spectrum. I'm getting .350 down right now and it was .130 earlier. The fastest I've ever had is 1.6
idownvoteyouruglycats
I have spectrum, have similar speeds to his. You should complain if you're not getting what you're paying for.
HalifaxSamuels
They don't advertise upload speeds, though, and my advertised download speed is exactly what I get. Kinda shit for the price.
Noodles2003
130 down? This is mine: https://imgur.com/aF6kiL8
YourMomsPantyDropper
I have Spectrum & I get 350 down & 25 up, 5 networks, with digital cable in all 4 rooms for about 160/mth & I can still use my Nighthawk x6
buttondick
I just tested my spectrum. 68 Mbps down. 6.7 up.
Anwinity
My download is usually good with them (200-315 Mbps) but my upload rarely goes above 10. Great for most stuff, bad if i wanna host a game.
VoyagerWasTheBestTrek
I finally said goodbye to comcast when i moved and have spectrum now. I pay for 60 down and ive never seen less than that +/- 10%.
RoboCoonie
I'm actually getting 80 Mbps on Spectrum, and I pay for 50, so I'll take this for now.
Quasi5
Spectrum has optimized it's Speedtest.net speeds to show overly optimistic speeds. Go to fast.com to see the real speeds, hosted by Netflix.
HalifaxSamuels
All ISPs have optimized all well-known internet speed test sites. Fast.com was made to see if your ISP was throttling Netflix only.
TheHappyHermit
Spectrum.. "upto 60mbps"
TWC was going to up speed to 50/5 then Spectrum bought them and...nothing.
itxtalone
Sorry to hear that. I got spectrum and I get like 60 down and 20 up. I like them, but there are at least 2 options, so they have to fight
SoCloseToCalamity
I send you good vibes, and hope that one day you have a better (and cheaper) option as I now do!
GrimReaper411
I too have Spectrum. However, I get 320Mbps down and 20-30Mbps upload. They are nice in my city. Sorry you had troubles with them.
bigbootybigfoot
I'm just biding my time until Cincinnati Bell makes its way to my neighborhood. They suck but if you complain they lower the price.
Astrolife75
Not saying I like spectrum but I pay for 300mbps and I get.
Anwinity
Same for download but my upload is not very good :/
HalifaxSamuels
I don't like my upload speed & it's expensive, but it's reliable and I have a VPN so they can't watch what I do (which they do like to do).
Nottheuseryouarelookingfor
Same. I pay for 150 and sometimes get close to 200. But they aren't a monopoly here
itxtalone
Same here, I get about what I pay for, ( 50 to 100) but they are not the only company, so they have to try and be good.
nihilismhelpsnoone
1. Are you on Wi-Fi or hardline? Wifi slows the initial connection drastically. 2. Cable companies advertise in megaBITS per sec and 1/2
nihilismhelpsnoone
sites like fast.com measure in megaBYTES per sec. 8 bits in a byte. Not that cable companies don't suck but this is info that might help 2/2
nihilismhelpsnoone
Also, adding a router will slow your connection speed too. More devices in line = more processing time.
HalifaxSamuels
It's not a technical problem. It's my WAN connection. That's just how fast it is.
Bibulus
I have never once seen a speed test site measure in bytes rather than bits, and fast.com specifically displays bits
Arceus
Fuck Charter. Pay for 60 and I am then 1 then 60 then 20 then 30 then 2 then 40 then 4
[deleted]
[deleted]
Arceus
Ethernet cord and off a desktop, I've also had Charter come out. The cause for the connection is the fact that they haven't updated (1/2)
Arceus
the network lines in a long ass time and its completely overloaded. The speeds are completely variable due to when people are connected.
Arceus
Where I live, we have no competition due to Charter blocking anyone else from coming in. 2 cities next to us have 5+ options.
Zyrixion
How can you wish your upload was higher, how are you even coming close to using it? You could stream over 6 1080p streams from your house.
HalifaxSamuels
You can't stream a decent 1080p 30 fps (much less 60) video at 6 Mbps. 6 MBps, yeah, but that's not what this is.
Zyrixion
So, since I'm a streamer and do this, let's go over it; my bitrate and twitch's suggested bitrate is about 3000, which roughly translates 1/
Zyrixion
2/ to about 3mbps upload speed, so yes, in fact, he could do exactly what I said on paper.
HalifaxSamuels
Neat, so in theory I can stream from my house. Well, in practice, I can't stream without losing frames if I don't drop the bitrate.
HalifaxSamuels
And at the bitrate that was reliable I was very unhappy with the quality of the video. I've tested this many times on different platforms.
ImWeezering
WRONG there are megabytes and megabits. Data is in megabytes, ISP's advertise in megabits. A megabit is 1/8th of a megabyte.
Zyrixion
You're correct, however, BITrate is ALSO measured in BITS, so they are not in different units.
Schiwing
Competition is bad though; this is what no competition gets you =
/sarcasm
TheNighUnstoppableForceKnownOnlyAsThomasCorso
That's amazing good though
TheNighUnstoppableForceKnownOnlyAsThomasCorso

ghostToast323
www.fast.com its hosted by Netflix so that it gives an actual representation of what your isp will provide for 3rd party streaming services
IGuessIamThatGuy
This is literally all my parents can get at their house in the country. CenturyLink DSL. Ugh.
NathanaelTendam
Living in canada this is standard 60 dollars a month
JanaJustinsdottir
No competition isn t always bad depending on how that situation came about. A “no competition” golden age just died in my province...
JanaJustinsdottir
We had MTS, which maintained it s monopoly by setting it s prices oppressively low. Had had unlimited high speed internet for $25/m,...
JanaJustinsdottir
My cell, unlimited data $57/m. Was glorious, Rogers, Telus etc. tried to move in, only to be crushed. Then Bell bought MTS... we finally...
JanaJustinsdottir
Understand, they jacked up the prices and the vultures descended. Our services became grindingly slow, customer service is now awful...
JanaJustinsdottir
And the cheapest internet starts at $70/m limited slow speed. All the other giants have moved in with the same pricing. We miss our monopoly
missastromccluskey
That's Australian internet speeds...
shiyal
:/ we have like 6 at work.
nryking
What company do you have!?!??
happycampy
My father's business is in milpitas Ca, he was getting 5Mbps up+down. Another company doubled the speed...for $600 a month. I kid u not

WHAT THE FUCK
illumaknotty
This is mine too!! I have att, and this happens because in my shitty part of Ohio the neighborhood nothing is wired for anything over 15mbps
Inmate45
Shit... As an aussie, even my net is faster than that.
kjp2k6
Until you get "competition" of duopolies who pool their interests and prices. Shit happens on the daily
TheBestNamesAreTaken
That's called "price fixing" and it's illegal.
CardboardStomach
Until one of them buys out the other or institutes a merger, then it goes right back to being a perfectly legal monopoly.
TheBestNamesAreTaken
If it's a true monopoly, it's either backed by stupid, out of date law, ie "Common Carrier", or it should be at the center of an anti-trust
mymylee
FLockwood
That is indeed a sweet ping
ahiso
The only problem i see in ping is when it's around 60 above but that is indeed a sweet ping
CardboardStomach
Have to be conscious of location though. Speed test lets you select a server closer to you, so in practice your ping could be much worse.
yourbassist
My ping is usually between 2-5.
FLockwood
Sad... Mine goes around 12
areweprophets
What's ping?
tehcron
Lower ping is better for gaming and voice/video calls over the internet.
Counterfit

You can still get speeds that low on FiOS?
JeffGodofBiscuits
only if you pay for 50...

Weird, I've always gotten higher than promised speeds on FiOS

All about dat ping tho
LamarTheHeadhumper
Probably a local speed test server
tehcron
Yep. Any ISP can run a speed test server inside their network. With speedtest.net you can select a server anywhere you want.

Don't use speedtest.net the numbers are false.

Didn't downvote but this is half true. You need to know what you're doing to get accurate numbers.

Spectrum and Grande Communications, huh? That sounds familiar. You don't live near San Antonio do you?
abrakadumbass
I'm in SA. waiting for google fiber to finally happen.
shinagami091
They’ve started taking signups in the West over hills area.
Punk1209
Me too. Im on far northeast side. I cant wait to get rid of Grande.

As a fellow San Antonio resident, it can't happen fast enough. Fuck Spectrum, and AT&T, with a cactus.

About two hours north, in Temple. Hello fellow Texan!
IHateYouMyselfAndEveryone
Grande pays their customer service employees 15/hr and gives them top-tier packages for free. They have amazing customer service.
