I recently saw diesel for just over $8/gallon here in LA county. Today, 17 September, our Costco has premium for $6.36/gallon and regular for $5.90/gallon. Since I’ve been sporadically tracking Costco gas, it was cheapest on 10 March (when I started tracking) and premium was $5.35/gallon and regular was $5.00/gallon.

Iran always had extremely high Gasoline subsidies, and their prices have always been low relative to more developed economies. Literally every other economic indicator indicates that their economy has been tanking for a while, and the blockade made it worse. For reference, they have ~85% inflation and ~10% unemployment. As a reference, U.S. inflation is ~3.5% and is considered a significant problem.

The Biden price was just a perfect storm of horrible. Due to Covid, oil production shut down because there was less demand, Russia invaded Ukraine, refineries and oil fields took longer to open / purposely didn't open to keep the price per barrel high meaning more profits in the oil company pockets. As you said, today's is due to Trump destabilizing the middle east and Ukraine bombing Russian refineries.

It is actually a super simple fix, ban all exports of petroleum products... and then treat gasoline and diesel as public utilities requiring a Citizen's Utility Board to raise prices (to make sure they cover costs).... but that would be socialism and socialism in the US is only for the bailout of failed businesses like GM and banks.
