My neighbour had a cat and I often heard her through the wall, yelling at the cat to "stop this" or "stop that". The cat was often alone at home, so my impression is that he was just horribly bored and may have done things the owner did not like.
I follow Billispeaks on youtube and you can see how much even older cats want to play and socially interact. So, I was really sad for the lonely kitty.

Recently, the cat passed away and only a week later, my neighbour had a little puppy.
And now I hear her yell at the puppy to "stop this" or "stop that".
When they are outside on the meadow behind our appartment block, she always yells "here" and the puppy's name, but I have the feeling the puppy does not get proper training to even understand what is expected of her.

So, today I asked my neighbour (after a friendly greeting), if she thought the puppy even knew what she wanted of her when she yelled her name.
Neighbour, looking a bit miffed, answered: "Yes, I think she does."
Naturally, I didn't know what to answer to that.

I see this very often with dog owners in a close-by neighbourhood: They just yell all kinds of commands at the dogs or even say things like: "Will you stop that right now!?"
And I'm like: "YOUR DOG DOES NOT UNDERSTAND RHETORICAL QUESTIONS, KAREN!!!"

Dogs are clever and able to pick up human words very well, but they need to be taught those words first. They need to know what is expected of them when this or that word is spoken. And that takes time and repetition plus rewards/praise and a clear speech.

Furthermore, dogs want to explore. They want to have freedom too. They want to rund around and sniff things and pee on things and look at things and interact with other people and dogs. If you don't give them this freedom, they'll probably be more unwilling to follow your commands when it matters.
Dogs are perceiving their humans as family, and they want to be treated like everybody wants to be treated by their family members or they are likely to act out.

There is a lady called Alexis Devine with her two dogs Bunny and Otter and I think she does it very well. She spent a lot of time on teaching the dogs, but also on catering to their emotional, cognitive and physical needs. The dogs use soundboards to communicate, just like Billi, the cat, does, but that's not the point. The point is that both of these owners are willing to "listen" to their pets and understand them as having their own wishes and plans.

The worst thing is that the kind of people who stupidly yell at their dogs also stupidly yell at their children. To a point where the children are either emotionally distraught or just shut down and stop listening completely. Probably the same reaction the dogs have.

And, coming back to my neighbour: She's a kindergarten teacher. I don't want to know how she treats the children under her care.

TL;DR: If you don't have the patience to teach your pets or children good behaviour while simultaneously giving them the freedom they need, then please don't have any.
