For books, art, anything that you need copyrighted, this is the place to go. Also, PUBLISHING rights as well. It DOES cost money (around 150 online or 100 if you can mail in your work). Before sending anything to a publisher or distributor, copyright the hell out of your stuff. This also goes for music. If you can ALWAYS include the PUBLISHING RIGHTS as well, especially with music. You can also record your stuff all officially like so you can prove you created it at a certain time. Explore the site and see what you need, which will usually be copyright stuff. (Right now it is down for maintenance. It will be finished Monday)

Now, this is for protecting music and for music publishing. It lets you know who's music is protected by what and is a start for protecting music and getting permission to use certain music.
Licenses
Mechanical License boils down to "permission to use a song." Every see a youtube thing that got removed due to some background music? Well, they need to have this in order to use the music. Of course, making money by selling that song is still super illegal since the license does not give you publishing or copyrights. Always double check to make sure what you can and can't do with the licenses. HOPE YOU ENJOYED! I don't post much so let me know if there is anything you want me to cover I didn't get at here. I lurk no more....
