Every time in that last five mins, some invisible tit dances through the room spray aerosolized onion around. I can never catch him though.

I'll never not cry at this finale. The futility of it all! That's what the best comedy does - have you crying laughing, and thinking deeply.

I never knew how it ended. :_(
HeraKJuno
It’s also how the whole show ended, if you don’t count the specials.
arkham711
One of harshest and surprising endings ever for a tv series.
angryscreechingnoise
I would like you to imagine for a moment, me, wanting to show my friend clips of a funny show, looking up the name of the show on 1/?
youtube, and playing this scene for my friend. now, I was not aware of this scene at the time, and I said "this is the funniest show 2/?
I have ever seen" before playing the scene for them. I have never felt more betrayed. 3/3
Snatched79
I hate the fact that some yank has used this amazing but very sad scene to make a point regarding the shit show thats going on in Merica.
I could probably make a better point with something from "Yes, Prime Minister" but it's harder to find good gifs from that series.

Best ending ever put in a series. That fade to the poppies is haunting .

Onions. Damn and blast it! Onions every where...
britdick
...brilliant ending to a brilliant show. Rowan is a National Treasure. The cast and writing of the entire series is perfect. ??
CirB
After watching the entire series, I deeply enjoyed the Back & Forth.
realGeorgelucas
And THAT is for Ken Branagh's endless, four-hour version of Hamlet.
secretdpp
The movie was a solid end
ShadowbanMyAss
Except for the part where he left his family for a way younger woman
James Caster's girlfriend, in point of fact. Crazy.
Newlyof
What? Rowen Atkinson left his wife for James Acaster's gf? I'm off to Google that
Just noticed I spelled his name wrong. Typical. Acaster would approve.
He did an entire stand up show where that was the punchline...saw him in Dublin last year. He's an amazing comedian.
I've never seen him live. Would love to. Hopefully sometime in the not too too distant future.

Amazing episode. For a show that's really funny I think they nailed that moment
bumCandle
Originally you see them all gunned down but Atkinson and co knew it wasn't working during filming, so in post they grabbed stock footage 1/2
Of a poppy field and faded into it before you saw the fate of the characters, creating one of the most powerful TV show endings ever made
DaveNI
According to the documentary the raw footage is rough and they thought they had messed the end up. Only during editing it came together

I put a note in my diary today. It simply says…”bugger”.

Brilliant too, as we didnt see it coming with the rest of the series being comedy. -Get sent to the wrong location or a cunning plan works
It just hit, like- wait, theyre at the ladders? Whats the plan? Whats the interruption? Oh....
JustTawnee
When Cpt. Darling says "Thank God, we lived through it. The Great War, 1914-1917", and the penny dropped...
HmmmThatsNice
I still never forgave Melter for sending in Darling

stil gets me teary eyed. i usually watch this episode on remembrance day. "sir...I'm scared, sir"
JamJarman
Part of the reason was they felt that without a sad ending they would have been criticized for poking fun at WW1
GadenKerensky
I also heard they thought about adding more humour to the ending but decided it would've been inappropriate and disrespectful.
SheepySleepySmuggler
I think it more than just respect though - Blackadder is a career soldier, he spends the series trying not to die and the inescapable....
...finality of death captures a message often lost in war drama. We concentrate on the lucky heroes rather than the unlucky dead....
...and with all of the main characters dying it reinforces the inescapable reality is WWI trench warfare. While the final scene is....
Yeah it was. The final scene was a real gut-punch.
Oh I thought the “this” was your post lol
Zamm005
I presumed that was the intention? A slow fade to black for US democracy as we all fall down...
Agathon
What show?
mynameisnotmuseli
Black adder goes fourth
gertrudex5
The slow motion and fade effects at the end of the episode were not scripted, but the decision to use them was made in editing...
after the final scene was hastily filmed on an unconvincing polystyrene set, ruining the poignancy of the sequence...
the episode's director Richard Boden added the poppy field image.
Ifarsenicfailstrysalgebra
They wanted the scene to reflect the seriousness of WWI and as 1 and 3 men died they didn't want to make light of their sacrifice.
Noob3rts
Pretty accurate. Hell, in certain fights, it was almost 2 out of 3 men. Look up some of the regiments lost on the Somme. :/
Delathi
It was said that when Marshal Foch came up to the line, he broke down weeping, saying, "My god, we sent them into that?"
(1) At least some men cared. Many of the people in charge were awful commanders that are praised to this day even though they ignored info
Yeah I watched the Rowan Atkinson interview and he went into detail on how dark it got.
