I sometimes wonder why cave paintings are not more elaborate or accurate. I mean they put significant amounts of time into gathering materials, selecting a location and actually doing the thing that I would think there would be some examples of greater skill. And these would be people that would probably be pretty physically fit and dexterous, moreso than a lot of us today.
Only a tiny fraction of all cave paintings survived. They need very specific conditions in order to survive, with little moisture and ideal temperatures. Even the breath of humans or animals can damage them. As Chauvet-Pont d'Arc in France shows, stone age humans were capable of producing incredibly naturalistic art:
A big thing is there was no concept of art like we know or distanced communication; most likely if you didn’t have a talented and genius artist in your little tribe who thought to try and paint there no chance to pass it on reliably imo I’m not a historian but it makes sense to be an attribute as to why we don’t see Mona Lisa’s on cave paintings
I get it. but it is one of those sad things lost to time. If there was some ancient da Vinci that picked up charcoal from the fire and like to sketch on a large piece of bark we will just never know. Until we get this time travel thing square.
