Fun fact, switching to Firefox with full ublock bypasses this and... it's just a paywalled article underneath.

AdBlock Detector Bypass is a browser extension that works pretty well for that

You can get around most paywalls by using archive.is

That's usually when I close the window and go elsewhere. I don't care anymore and refuse to feel guilt over it.

Yup, that's what I usually do. But the faux attempt to "have my best interest in mind" made me want to at least cost them the bandwidth.
