Explanation: The Astra Militarum, also known as the Imperial Guard in colloquial Low Gothic, is the largest coherent fighting force in the galaxy and serves as the Imperium of Man's primary military force and first line of defence from the myriad threats which endanger the existence of the Human race in the 41st Millennium.
It is comprised of countless billions of men and women -- hundreds of thousands of different regiments, supported by a vast array of light and heavy armoured vehicles that provide the Imperial Guard's primary offensive punch. The Astra Militarum is usually the first Imperial force to respond to a threat if a world's Planetary Defence Force (PDF) fails to suppress it.
Fun Fact: Despite generalizations of guard regiments and appearances (largely due to the tabletop game), many worlds have their own soldiers of unique name and skill sets, these include; Tallarn Desert Raiders, Catachan Jungle Fighters, and Valhallan Ice Warriors, as well as many more.

Ya know I get that space marines are space marines but the incessant focus on them really does underplay the guard. Be it the tabletop game, black library novels, video games, or any other media the guard that should be the bulk of the imperium's combat forces always seems to end up second bananas to the marines.

100000000%, the problem is - its REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY fucking hard to write a compelling book from a regular joes perspective when you have planet destroying weapons, skyscraper sized bugs, psychic powers that can bend space/time/reality and skeleton robots that atomize everything....average joe becomes canon fodder REAL fucking fast. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see a book from a guardsman POV thats in the thick of it and lives that shit would be BALLER.

Well there are billions of guardsmen, and each chapter has about 1000 marines, and there are 20? legions. Each marine should be an absolute powerhouse unit but should be super rare. Its the jedi problem all over again, we focus on the absolute badasses because that is what they were designed to be.
That said, I fully agree and prefer shit that focuses on the inquisition and rabble of the galaxy. Lets go Dark Heresy and Necromunda!

So originally there were 20 legions, with each legion being made up of around 100 chapters, each with 1000 marines when the whole crusade started. By the heresy 3000 years later only 18 legions remained but done of those legions ballooned to as triple their starting size. Of course the heresy happened, 9 of those legions went traitor and so on. Then the legions were broken apart into individual chapters acting independently and there were hundreds of those and then later foundings added more.

The most recent founding the ultima founding is estimated to have created so many new marine chapters it doubled the total number of marines active in the imperium.

Yes. Fem Sanguinius who has wings and precog abilities which makes him/her a mutant and psyker both of which are anathema to the Imperium. The guardsmam is a Cadian which have a warp touched mutation that gives them purple eyes making them warp/chaos touched mutants
