Sad to hear he passed. RIP. One of the many great players that came out of that school and scene (I went to school there too and can attest to them being rugby mad). Saw him once or twice.

Admittedly rugby outside ex-British territories is a very minority sport. But this guy was one of the best. And during the amateur era too.

Played Rugby once 50 something years ago. Bunch of Scots, English, soldiers. Everyone was smiling and whacking and smashing and I was getting pissed off. Thought it was some "Beat on the Yank" thing and they were having fun. Still haven't figured out if they have rules in rugby, but in retrospect, through all the pain, they were all gentlemen having a good time.

There are loads of rules (someone will come on and correct me and say "laws" no doubt). Nobody remembers them half the time and even the pros get it wrong! There are also two versions. But we won't go into that...

The crux of it is you beat the shit out of each other, but when you cross that whitewash and come off the pitch, you're all mates again.

At that age, I was good with that kind of thing, if I'd understood it. There was a lot of beer involved as well, which might add to the thick skull lack of understanding. I didn't get really pissed off, more or less annoyed, and had a good day. Good guys.

A story... Well there's the infamous match in '78 when NZ prop, John Ashworth stamped on his face, causing a wound needing 30 stitches (and allegedly JPR lost over a pint of blood while attempting to play on, before they could stem the bleeding). He was stitched back up by his dad on the sidelines and went back out to finish the game for Bridgend.

As in he was a Legend. No drama. I live here and mines not the best. Carried on playing for his little local team till in his late 40’s I believe. Hell of a man.
