Advice from a frustrated professional driver

Edit: (As in, stopping and rolling forward again takes maybe an extra three seconds out of your day, not that you should stop and count to three before moving again.)
As someone who drives vehicles that take a good portion of a city block to stop, this one startles me at least two or three times a week. Once or twice a month, I genuinely think someone's about to roll right out in front of me. People stop in the wrong place, and they stop far too abruptly. There's a big difference in perceived intent between a car that's creeping forward from behind the stop line, and a car that just barreled right over that line without even slowing down (to screech to a halt at the very edge of the main road).

This is a bit of a no brainer, but I see it so often, especially on highways. I see cars that would probably crash if the driver in front of them slowed down a bit too quickly, let alone actually hit something and stopped.

As the driver of a wide vehicle who needs the whole lane, it drives me nuts when personal vehicles cut across the empty, "No parking from here to curb" parking lane to turn right, instead of actually getting into the lane, leaving the rearmost part of their vehicle still sitting in the middle lane as they wait for a chance to complete their turn.

I'm not talking about people piling into the intersection at advance greens. That's right up there with mild speeding for things I'm not even going to bother trying to discourage people from doing. This is about lanes with their own dedicated light, where you can only go on the arrow, no waiting in the intersection. People will try and keep piling through 'til the last second. Problem is, once that light turns red, the crosswalk signal starts, so at intersections with lots of foot traffic, cars trying to complete their (late) left turn get cut off by pedestrians, and are then left blocking all oncoming lanes. This doesn't happen all the time, but I definitely see it a few dozen times a year.

Exactly what it says on the tin. Stepping slightly off the sidewalk definitely helps too. It shouldn't in theory, but in practice, a lot of drivers aren't paying too much attention to anything beyond the asphalt. Finally, don't step back and wave drivers on while waiting for traffic to clear? What's even the point of the crosswalk then? Of course, this is only for crosswalks in the middle of nowhere. At a controlled intersection, just go on the light.

So, I did a bit of research, and apparently this is yet another thing that is uniquely a point of contention in the US, while being a complete non-issue everywhere else. Here in Canada, cars built after 1990 have to have daytime running lights. I drive for eight hours a day, and trust me, cars without light are definitely a lot less noticeable, even in bright sunlight.

Now, I'm pretty sure very few people actually do this, but I included it because it's annoying as hell. Had a police officer do it just the other day, then proceed to go zipping down a 50kmh road at what must have been about 80...

This is a big one. People usually know when it's their turn, they don't need you telling them when to go, especially when they're not supposed to be going yet. Same goes with letting people in from side roads. If traffics congested, sure, let a gap open, but if traffics flowing smoothly, keep it that way. They'll get their chance. I've lost count of the number of times I've waited for one last car to pass, only for that last car to stop to let me in, which I would have been able to do if they just kept going. Needless to say, I don't take them up on it, because if they decided to stop waiting at just the wrong time and hit me, I would be entirely in the wrong.
