Tosin Abasi
Of Animals as Leaders fame, Tosin comes from a classical background and has melded centuries of musical progression into what can only be described as a phenomenal mastery of the instrument. His spider like ability to crawl across the notes in such a fluid, precise and complex manner allow him to create a sonic maze that gives the listener a multitude of options to navigate.

The beauty in how he has chosen to express himself is in the absolute command he has in the way the sounds are presented. While his music is not for everyone, his talent and influence on the genre is undeniable.

Derek Trucks (the +1)
I had to sneak this guy in on this post just because he is without doubt one of the most formidable guitarists in the world right now as well. I saw him play with Eric Clapton and to be honest, he stole the show by producing the most delicate and powerful blues slide guitar I've ever come across.

Skip to 4:00 for the goodness but it doesn't hurt to listen to a band made up of hot players and Susan Tedeschi who sounds like a young Bonnie Rait.

Straight up blues - enjoy :)

Sure, Tosin can play, but he can't write an interesting song.

+1 for Trucks
Danowar1990
I agree that he's a great musician but "redefining the craft" is a bit much.
PerusinThrough
I agree too. Maybe driving the craft forward?

I'd also like to see Emil Werstler and John5 included here
BlahDerpBlah
I'll add some links for both in case someone doesn't know them:

Both have a commanding mastery of the way they choose to express their music, but (even as a metal guy) daaaamn do I prefer Trucks [1/2]
BlahDerpBlah
even though his slide playing perhaps wouldn't be as technically difficult as Tosin's techniques. All about them feels, man [2/2]
PerusinThrough
If it gives me chills. I'll give it the time to respect it.
BlahDerpBlah
Absolutely. As someone who plays an instrument, that's what it's about. Regardless of genre.
