This post next to the soccer fans partying in USA is a nice touch. Nice contrast. One people fighting for their land. And then tourists only caring about their own happiness, spending their money in a country controlled by Nazis. Nice.
And mainstream media, virtually silent. You really have to hunt for updates on the protests. Protests where literally half the country’s people take too the streets.
The protests in an actual American state - Minnesota - started in January and lasted into April and there are still regular protests outside the ICE headquarters
DC streets were *filled* with protesters (and only increased in number after sandwich guy) during the summer of last year and into Fall
As far as most news sites are concerned, though, the protests lasted... ... ... maybe a day???
I do not know much about the situation, but... isn't high profile resort a good thing for a poor country that earns at least 20% of all moneyz on tourism?
Yeaaa relying on tourism isnt a way to get out of being a poor country. Tourism doesnt really pay good wages for the workers, who, ultimately, are the ones whos conditions constitute a poor or wealthy country.
It's not when it's exclusive to a select few super rich, while at the same time destroying protected nature sites, on top of the shady/illegal land acquisition.
Albania has 250,000 people protesting in a country of 2.38 million. More than 10% of the population. NYC gets around 100,000 at the No Kings protests, with a population of 8.58 million. That's around 1.2% of the NYC population. And I'm pretty sure NYC is smaller than Albania. No comparison.
Its cultural "First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice"-MLK Jr.
I doubt that most can tell the difference between negative peace and positive peace. But the reality is that we will likely not be motivated until our livelihoods are threatened amd we need to start rationing food. Id bet money that our oligarchs know this and thats why credit card debt is such a useful tool for them.
I feel like the cracks are starting. The “all you had to do was pay us enough to live” was where I was hoping it would start but I guess the cracks need to get deeper.
These kinds of incidents are currently outliers, but yes they could become mainstream. Like a receding sea can signal a tidal wave. Or unusual animal behavior predicts an earthquake.
I think a good point someone made is the US is so much bigger than the countries in Europe too. It would take a lot more organization and people being on the same page. It would be like all of Europe having to come together to protest to be equivalent.
Yes, and don't forget there are about 30 million people here who blindly, rabidly support trump, so attending any anti-trump rally has some element of danger.
We'll get there eventually, because we ain't doing shit to stop the crap that makes it necessary. And when it does happen, you're gonna see an absolute flood of 1%ers being to the exits, because they STILL don't understand.
We do, the thing is that its not covered in the same way by mainstream media. Abroad its "valiant people standing up for their rights and freedoms." At home its "Look at the freeloading whiny bitches. They need to grow up and get real jobs"
America has been told for generations now that the Soviet Union failed because of communism. Collectivist action has been heavily maligned under this concerted propaganda effort, it's not something the current American populace will awaken to overnight.
As I have visited both countries (USA & USSR/russia) dozens of times since 1984, I have never understood this. Real diference have been that americans have had better vanity stuff, individualism to the max mentality, "shiny stuff". But in reality same level slavery. Americans beeing corporation slaves and soviets/russians state slaves. Basically government dictated slaves. Only big diference is, that americans are doing it voluntarily, they have the good information accessible unrestricted.
This, mostly. I spend all of my afternoons working to fight this regime, but I have a responsibility to my daughter to keep a roof over her head, so I spend my days working. I'm not alone in this either.
You topple murderous regime just once, and then start all over with better plan. So no issues there. Except the individualistic way of thought prevents it. And THEY know it, and exploit it. Soviet Union was great example when toppled. From there, there were this 10 year period there were hope. but individualistic ideas won.
Yup, trying to teach a collective methodology when you've never lived it is hard. Getting people to actually try to learn is even harder. Far too many people in my community are just keeping their heads down and hoping things get better if they do nothing, it's maddening. Especially when they later come to us for help because they didn't realize it would affect them.
Yeah. Showing up for 3 hours on a single weekend day once every 4 months is really doing wonders. Yes the crowds look impressive, but the people at No Kings are basically a ROUNDING ERROR when compared to the greater population. WE NEED MORE, and it needs to last longer than an afternoon! But most of us have jobs and can't afford to miss work for that long, so we're caught between a rock and a hard place.
That burns their money and power, sure. But you gotta really, really hurt itby striking long term. They know a nationwide strike would make the working class blink first.
Yeah, I just started thinking about this recently. Gotta lay in a 40 day survival stock of food and other necessities for the family in order to make it possible to participate in a nationwide strike/boycott. I never did that for disaster prep, gotta think differently now.
