I recommend Hunters and Sandworms in the main story simply because Chapterhouse ends on a cliffhanger due to Author Existence Failure.

True, I'll check them out sometime. Reading some of B&K's other Dune books gave me a bad taste for their writing style and tone.

Extremely complex world building and plot(s). When starting, reference the glossary or wiki the terms. Be patient.

The main books start to get dense and much more philosophical, especially Children and God-Emperor. And Heretics and Chapterhouse crank...

...the politics up to 11. The others are much lighter, but that lack of higher themes compared to Frank's books is a common complaint.

plot and character wise Dune starts out as pretty cut and dry adventure story before it starts getting subversive with that

I've read all of them and do like some of the history thats flushed out but takes a fair bit of determination to get through them all.
