He's oso special!

When I was like 7 my older brother told me Hawaii was a floating island and that each year it sinks one inch and some day, in our lifetime it was going to be completely under water. I didn't find out til much later that it's actually several islands.

"I don't make my bed for the same reason I don't re-tie my shoes after I take them off"

Good luck out there.

#9 so, uh, not very hygienic but I guess cooking will remedy that.

#2 the closest Gen z/alpha have to this issue is all the Tiktok songs that go viral then you listen to the full release and it's garbage up to the section that went viral with.

#24 the Bermuda triangle is a thing because it's historically a busy shipping lane. It's like remarking that a lot of traffic accidents happen on busy roads and finding that mysterious.

#1 With how crowded those pots are, at least you can rest assured that it's not a thing you'll have to deal with for long.

#29 i'd like to add, when you feel like you are hungry but nothing sounds good, drink water.... then if still hungry, eat.

Gotta be a weekly occurrence in my house that I remind my kids of this, and it always rings true.

#16 I invited the wrong child to my daughter’s party when she was 5. Thought some kid was crashing our party at the park! Then had to explain the next school day to the actual friend, which is hard to do for a 5 yo, why we didn’t invite the little girl to her friend’s party.

#3: The british(right before taking over the world): I say, old chap, what if we just mix some of the juice of citrus fruits with alcohol and drink it all the time?

3 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Funnily enough, even when they figured out (mostly) what was causing scurvy, it kept being an issue for a while... Apparently there was a mix up between (depending on which source you read) the word "lime" having been used for citrus in general but thought to mean specifically limes, or the word "limon" being mistranslated as lime instead of lemon.
Either way, YES, that is where the perjorative "Limey" come from!

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

and they forgot it enough that British Antarctic expeditions got scurvy in the early 1900s.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sadly some early tests put lime juice in barrels with copper fittings, which destroys Vitamin C. So that set back the whole thing a few decades.

#2 any music store I went to in the 90s onward, had listening booths, or at least headphones with new albums playing on repeat.
Even my local Walmart had headphones for popular new albums.
Only albums I bought without listening to most of the songs first, was Def Leppard high n dry, Mr. Big Actual Size, and Tool Lateralus.
Luckily for me those three albums were all chock full of bangers.

3 months ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

I purchased too many shit albums just because I loved the band. You kind of got used to some of the songs.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I was growing up, only record stores let you preview albums, and even then, it was only whatever was new that week. But since they charged more for the albums than Target or the department stores at the mall, I rarely, if ever, went to a record store.

That's why, most of the time, I stuck to "Greatest Hits" albums. I got burned too many times buying an album, and the only thing on it worth listening to was ONE song that got played every hour or two on the radio.

3 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The record store I used to go to let you listen to any album you wanted to, and they had comfy chairs for listening.

#12 Remember: People who try to tell you specific punctuation marks are signs of AI are either 1.) Unfamiliar with writing or 2.) Pedants with an axe to grind and see this as their opportunity to pick on their least favorite punctuation mark. AI uses em-dashes because the writers it copies use em-dashes. AI uses the Oxford Comma because USAmericans use the Oxford Comma and are the largest contributor of English writing on the Internet. It's not a gotcha.

#3 Humanity has repeatedly discovered and forgotten the cure for scurvy - the first documented case was in 77AD when Pliny the Elder reported sailors eating sea kale to prevent it. Even the whole lemon thing took like 100 years because we thought it was the acid and kept trying boiled citrus juices instead - which destroys most of the Vitamin C.

#4 I was filling in a student about historical events of the seventies and eighties. I didn’t have the text reading available so I just described them to him. He stopped me and said, “ Don’t you need the reading packet for this?” I told him I lived through most of them.

Has @UncleSlam123 seen #13 before?

Ooo that looked way fluffier than it actually was! Great stuff here!

#2 that's why you recorded off the radio

3 months ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

Okay, DJ

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I found that more times than not what they played on the radio wasn't the really good stuff off of the album. But yeah, I did my fair share of recording, then perfecting it on the dual tape deck and then making copies for my friends

3 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

That’s how you do it

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And engage in.... piracy!?

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got 12 cds for 1 cent and only had to pay full price for 1.

3 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Wait... You actually paid full price for one? Are you allowed to do that?

I thought you were supposed to get the 12, then throw away everything that came in the mail from them, after that.

3 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well my parents ended up paying the bill. Then I'd order more in 6th months when they sent the new one

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're supposed to use a fake name, then they can't catch you.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And then, a couple of years later, order another 12.

3 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Man, the amount of waiting I did just to hit that record button on the tape deck...

What's your ibuprofen budget like these days?

3 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not nearly as high as my rx nasal spray budget since my body decided to gift me chronic nonallergic rhinitis 3 years ago (though I do keep a fair amount of advil cold & sinus on hand too for bad nights).

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I remember when I was young and healthy. Now I stand up in the morning and my body says

#29 So I guess I need to eat, sleep, and shower, but the problem is: I can't get up the motivation to do any of that.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah that'll happen

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you tried spite?

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm more motivated by the people I know love me. Being a terrible person doesn't exclude that

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#12 I feel the same about em dashes. Like, sorry you never learned the rules of punctuation, but it's not AI, it's autism.

3 months ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 4

For my entire life, I've literally never seen anyone go out of their way to use em dashes. And now that they're assumed to be an indicator of AI generated text, people are swearing up and down that they've always used them.

It feels like a claim AI bots would be programmed to disseminate to make their presence harder to identify.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I find em (and en) dashes unnecessary because those two characters and the hyphen all look fairly close to each other and the use cases for each of them is so different that you can just use the hyphen for all three and nobody will ever get confused.

And while I could see *some* usage for the em dash as a separate thing, there's like a half dozen accepted alternatives to situations when you would us it. And most of them look better than the em dash (imo) so I'd rather leave it by the wayside.

3 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Fair enough v

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The difference is, an Oxford comma can be easily produced on a standard keyboard, be it on a computer or smartphone - it's just a properly placed comma. An emdash cannot be produced on either device without some effort; an LLM, on the other hand, doesn't have to do what humans have to do to type emdashes, and thus can (and does) use them with impunity, making them a more reliable tell of AI-generated text.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Em dashes at least makes more sense as an indicator since they're not even accessible on a keyboard without doing alt codes, making them a highly inconvenient alternative to other punctuation that can be typed directly. Even if someone knows how to use them there's just not much reason to use them often, whereas a good bit of generated text seems to use them more than all other punctuation combined.

3 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Em dashes show up in Word365 if you type a dash twice and then a space. Sometimes a regular dash changes to an em dash with no input on my part. It's infuriating.

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It is common practice to substitute a double en dash when the em dash is not readily available. Many programs will automatically convert them to an em dash. But yeah, I think most people just use commas.

3 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I know how/when to use them but can't be arsed to use alt codes so I just use double-hyphens.

3 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This is the way. Even if the program you use doesn’t auto convert (but most do these days) people understand what it means.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pissed that you're not supposed to nest parens and quotes and other grouping operators. Like, your rules are just shit.

3 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Parentheses just exist to make programmers and IT folk mad. (Don't believe me? Watch this...

3 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait (for real? (Like really? (That's dumb)))

3 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

So long as you properly escape your characters, nest as deeply as you want!

3 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You can absolutely nest quotes; you just have to alternate using single and double quotes.

3 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

My Elizabethan lit class had many instances of a person quoting a person who quoted…. How I passed? That’s up to paranormal investigators to determine

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's a bit in the book of Revelations where the nesting gets like 7 or 8 deep somehow, which is wild.

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really hope you’ve seen ‘how I met your mother’ so I can make a Puzzles joke land… That’s the revelation!

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean correct punctuation is more a sign of just being an adult than the 'tisim but ok.

3 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 8

Do most adults know the difference between periods and question marks? Sure, though their proper usage is not guaranteed. But correctly using punctuation like em dashes, semicolons, or even ellipses are rare. There's a reason they're cited as AI tells. And I'm not saying someone has to be autistic to use these things; you just need a desire to do so in a world that doesn't value them. My particular flavor of neurodivergence compels me to their study and employment.

3 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Adults use correct punctuation and I suspect you shoehorn that you're 'tistic in every possible conversation.

3 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

You must have missed the part where these things are being cited as indicators of AI generated text, even though that's what my comment and the original meme was all about. Do try and keep up.

3 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Using 'adults' as your demographic that knows how to use punctuation properly is... Definitely a choice. It's the wrong choice, given how many adults in the US are functionality illiterate, but hey, don't let that stop you.
