I see this image posted a lot, and I want to clear up some things about this song. Some people like it, but others hate it, and before you listen, I'd like to explain why.
"Weightless" by Marconi (It's not Macaroni, look again. I know, I read it that way too) is supposedly the most relaxing song in existence. The reasoning behind this has to do primarily with the song's pitch and rhythm. The song starts at 60 beats per minute, but gradually slows down to 50 beats per minute over the course of about 8 minutes. The pitch of the song is also very low, so it's not meant to be straining on the ears, and resonates with the body.
HOWEVER, This is only the case with some people. For many others, myself included, this is one of the worst songs to listen to. If you have anxiety, I personally would not recommend listening to this song. In most cases I've seen, this song can increase anxiety and discomfort in people who are already under high levels of stress, anxiety, or depression. If you fall into any of these categories, then I have some potentially better playlists at the end of this post.
There are several reasons this song increases anxiety for some people:
- The song's tempo gradually slows down, which means it gradually changes. This means that it's impossible to find a steady, rhythmic beat at any point, because there never is one.
- At points, the song gets extremely low in pitch and sounds like it's pounding. This can create a lot of stress for some people. For my fellows out there with synesthesia, it sounds very much like a headache feels.
- The song has no repeating melody or sounds (This was on purpose. I know, right?) This can be anxiety-inducing for people with anxiety and/or OCD because it's impossible to predict, and patterns are often a much better way to calm these people down, as it allows them to have something to ground themselves to.
- The song ends on a very high pitched note, which can ruin any relaxing effects that the rest of the song had on you. If you even manage to make it that far, that is.
"So what are some alternatives?" I hear you asking from behind your phone screen at 2 in the morning.
Well, a good friend and I have found you some great alternatives that are actually relaxing. As someone with a lot of anxiety and stress, I've found that these playlists have calmed me down and made me feel more at peace than anything else. This may just be me personally, but I have to recommend some actual music before I let you go drive yourself crazy with eight minutes of low-pitched noise.
https://youtu.be/aK4JSwhdcdE - Skyrim Music & Ambience, Night - This is the only playlist that's ever actually put me to sleep. The soothing, gently echoing strings and nighttime ambience added in are always enough to calm me down. Definitely give this one a listen.
https://youtu.be/dd10InDdvJE - Skyrim Music & Ambience, Taverns - Another Skyrim one. Not as slow or tranquil as the previous one, but the gentle strum of a lute and the sweet song of a penny whistle shouldn't be overlooked. The repetitive nature of this one may not lull you to sleep, but it might put a smile on your face and make you want to comfort yourself with a hot meal and a stiff drink.
https://youtu.be/NntQ86FHcMY - Relaxing Breath of the Wild Music - I quite enjoy the slow piano in this one. Again, not one to fall asleep to, but one that can help you chill out after a rough day. No ambient sounds in this one, but sometimes the instruments simulate ambience and sounds of nature, which can be very calming and melodic.
https://youtu.be/-N-jQzBXkUU - Relaxing Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack - Noticing a theme with the video games? I thought so. Maybe that's because video game music is better engineered to give you a feeling while still adhering to traditional musical rules. Anyway, This one is a mixed bag, some slow, some fast, but all calming. Wouldn't recommend this to sleep by, but if you need to sit for a half hour and listen to something peaceful, this one is good too.
https://youtu.be/7LEmer7wwHI - Relaxing Studio Ghibli Piano - Hey look one that's not a video game! As the title implies, this one is all piano. A few of these are more somber, but the piano is always very soft and calming with these songs either way. I like this one when I'm doing nothing important, like just texting friends or just lying down for a few.
Those five are the best I could find. If you want to listen to Weightless after all, here's the link. Again, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS, but it works for some people.
******WARNING THIS IS THE SONG I WAS TALKING ABOUT******

Calming Cat Tax. Thanks for listening. Here's hoping you have a wonderful, relaxing morning/afternoon/evening/night.
TreeFiftyish
As someone with anxiety problems: Ty for the the alternative songs! Weightless is indeed not very helpful, tried it a few months back.
IWantToLickYourButt
Is it just me who had trouble breathing regularly listening to this
GingerParade
I read "Macarena" and now have that song in my head. Great.
benedictinmycumberbatch
Fyi video game background music is also great for studying!! It won't distract you, and will keep you content and focussed
Hetuni
It's because it doesn't have lyrics, any song without lyrics will help you but video game music is made to not detract from the focus.
BobbyBobbston
God, I felt extremely uncomfortable in the first few seconds I listened to that song...
Scratchtherobotchicken
"For my fellows out there with synesthesia, it sounds very much like a headache feels." because synesthesia is the same for everyone right?
necr0politan
That song gave me a headache almost instantly
lvhrmdly
Skyrim ambiance helps to put me and my newborn to sleep!

OnlyCoolKidsHaveTheBeetus
Oh god, the SKyrim Ambience/Music one, I'm already exhausted at work, should not have started listening. I'm ready to pass out now, lmao.

Will upvote Skyrim music ambience all the time. That playlist is perfect when I need to get stuff done. Cannot recommend enough.
AstynaxPie
The first time I read about this song, my newborn was screaming in my husband's arms as (1)
AstynaxPie
he walked her up and down the hall trying to get her to sleep. I thought, 'what the hell' (2)
AstynaxPie
and hit play. It took about 3 seconds, and she flopped over his arms and was out. We both looked at each other, like (3)
AstynaxPie
whaaaaaaaat just happened?! It hasn't worked every time since, but I'd still recommend it for babies!
thebeardrater
Reading all of that gave me anxiety
ookwrd
Synesthesia is subjective: wouldn’t it be less misleading to say it *can* sound like a headache feels, or it does for *some* synesthetics?
AlwaysPuffin
Better than human music?

Tycho -Dive always chills me out and it’s sad but some of LOST OST is the most beautiful somber music I listen to to wind down and sleep
SheaBriar
Tycho has some great stuff.

I have to wake up in under 4 hours for a day with 4 separate classes and I can't fall asleep, even though I went to bed at 1. FML.
ireallyreallylovecheetos
You asleep yet?
ImmaNeedBoutTreeFiddy
I haven't gone to sleep before 5am for the last two weeks... Uni.
downofathistle
It's midday and I have the day off work to lie in bed with my debilitating menstrual cramps, but at least I'll be calm through the pain now.
Duchessxo
Sometimes chamomile tea helps me, and painkillers. I see you posted this last week though so hopefully you’re feeling a bit better x
Ryncakes
I always wondered why the song always made me anxious. It just seemed so unnerving to me. Like remembering a bad dream. Thanks for the info!
MrFnortner
Pounding (decent) guitar rock at an intense volume always works for me. Leaves me drained and feeling almost post coital.
Blasfemur
It unnerves me, too. I attribute it to the heartbeat-like, persistent thump that makes me feel as if I'm being hunted.
mybliss
So it may reduce anxiety, but if you have anxiety, it is not recommended. What.
GlassCannon570
If you have clinical anxiety it does the opposite of what it’s supposed to do.
beerisgoodmkay
This is a tl;dr type of post for me but I will enjoy listening to the Skyrim ambiance videos. Thank you.
Shazzberry
So I guess I am one of the few, it is very relaxing to me. Interesting. I can feel it right away affecting my nervousness positively.
IAmSailorMoonMoon
Same happened to me, suuuper calming almost immediately
JHawke
It just makes me... extremely sleepy :D
GrimDarkKing
Macaroni onion is very tasty.
AllisonG444
The most calming and thought provoking music I've heard are the Mogwai instrumentals. Post-rock, very calm and soothing.
MisguidedGalacticGhost
Yes!! You should check out Tycho - they're my personal favorite but Mogwai is up there too.
Silverstrikerstar
Sometimes I measure time by the passing of repeats of Music for a Forgotten Future
fapjacks
Carbon-Based Lifeforms. Solar Fields. Asura. Aes Dana. (And all of their co-projects HUVA Network, Sync24, etc).
LordDeSeis
I love the first and fourth, but never heard of 2 and 3. Thanks a bunch!
fapjacks
I envy you, listening to Solar Fields and Asura for the first time! Also CBL just released Derelicts a couple weeks ago!
AdogeKitler
That macaroni song is like a song which is always starting but never actually starts
3angryOwls
Always starting but never actually starts? That sounds like every Tool song ever.
doctorbees
I hate those kinds of songs.
Lanka
Gh. "That sounds odd review" *listen a bit.* "..actually, that's quite right."
hoofherrightinthefrontbutt
For me, I relax to The Last Baron, by Mastadon.
AlienVsPredatorVsBrownVsTheBoardOfEducation
That whole album is incredible, great to fall asleep to.
Terrapin2190
Sounds a bit like the Grateful Dead the way you explain it.
RealRedbeard
It is like dubstep, just a long intro and nothing really happens. No, i don't like it.
CarlFisk
Hah no
giitsok
I haven't slept well in weeks. I also didnt sleep again last night. This song felt to drive me more insane. I need a repetitive beat
TSXmike
exactly how I felt. It did nothing for me.
DooksandPooks
All the drones flying around in the video made me anxious...

Like a shepherd's tone
MattDude
This is Beyonce's Crazy In Love for me. The song never begins proper. it's just long and seems to build up to something that never delivers.
Nickelbackfat
Thank you!
absentee
Bingo.
Fatboy333
agreed...meh, not for me.
TheGiantTater
Which is EXACTLY THE KIND OF THING PEOPLE WITH ANXIETY HATE! Seriously, who performed this study?
DrProfLenny
Kinda like freebird without the good bit
JHawke

Holy shit..... @op I thought I was the only one they listened to that Skyrim sound track!!! Also highly recommend the Witcher 3 calm music!!
EC6456
Ikr? I do have some pretty awful anxiety, but honestly I just thought I had a weird obsession with the Skyrim soundtrack. I feel much (1/2)
powderwt
Your not alone!! I've oddly grown to like some uppity stuff like Laszlo and feed me and modestep as well which is total opposite??
EC6456
Better knowing that other people use it to calm down too!
imadethistopostthedick
i listened to that weightless in its entirety...was just sounds. no noticible calming effect.
potatothegreat
Ive had that effect but only when listening to a live performance of a symphony. Also gives me the chills at times. Love it
italyball
It bored me to death.
mikeyman512
Is this the end - Zee Avi is a song that always calms me down but I don't have anxiety just a soothing voice
dawgdawg12321
I actually used to use this to fall asleep at night in college. Wouldn’t be awake anymore after the second time around
fauxnews
The song is relaxing enough to calm me down during a panic attack, but pretty much any "relaxing" track will do.
HaberdasherInGold
Mileage may vary. I found it to be incredibly relaxing.
Mournclaw
You might want to do a youtube seach for 432hz music. The titles sound suspicious to say the least (if you're skeptic) but if Weightless /1
Mournclaw
/2 worked for you, chances are those will too.
questionableanswers
hurts my ears tbh
marcusosappus
bp and heart rate both went UP after listening to it. was mildly irritating.
FromDenmarkWithHate
Because it's fucking pseudo bullshit!
Zobaken
Well, binaural music won't work if you have problems with hearing (only one working ear, for example), because it relies on stereo effect.
bud467
well the brain focuses on stuff that s different and changing, so audio that's evolving constantly is distracting as well.
Kayayayaya
The song sounds like something I would mash out on a Yamaha keyboard when I was 12.
TrashPandaTuesday
It actually worked for me. I was super skeptical but I was out like a fucking light half way through it.
Spankywylde
AlkeneThiol
Gave me a headache, just like OP said.
pentagoninformation
I don't think it works if your just sitting there going "damn it when does this shit kick in"
FunctioningWorkaholic
Jep... I was like "drop the beat dammit" the whole time.
StunnedGoofy
My sitting?!
imadethistopostthedick
nah, this was awhile ago. someone recommended the song to me. didnt know about the "relief" until after
ButtsandBewbs
That's the problem. It should be a blind listen, not preceeded by an extensive explanation of what it does and how.
justinmytime
Was I the only one that heard Neil deGrasse Tyson's voice while reading this...
ButtsandBewbs
I have no idea why you would do that but I'm very proud by the fact that my comment somehow reminded you of Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
Terrapin2190
He's contaminated the control group.
Knowyourcats
Exactly what I thought, I wished I listen to it before reading this, because I just wondering if it was calming or stressful the whole time
