Scientists were apparently able to grow a human spine in vitro, so there may be hope yet for the US as we move in to a Republican controlled White House, Congress, and Supreme Republican Court of the United States (SCROTUS).

That's great news for politicians!

Ha! Your little commentary with this link was HILARIOUS! Thanks for the spark of joy tonight.

But can they grow them a conscience or morals?
TrilithonStone
It's not a spine that congress needs... it's moral integrity.
metalrulercid
Give it to lindsey Graham
CrispyNougat
That Scrotus acronym switches letters
huffnpuff72
At any time, the number average of spines in the human body is more than 1. Except at a republican convention where it's close to zero.
HerrHat
Supreme Republican Court of the United 'Muricas (SCROTUM).
Endocrom
Somebody already posted Worf, so all I got is this
Sonicschilidogs
Quick question..... WTF is that?
Endocrom
Another Life. An alien virus caused that lady's nervous system to jump out of her body.
Sonicschilidogs
Yeah, if you could kindly, miss me with that shit homie, as they say, that would be greatly appreciated.
coastercrazypics
It will only cost you a million dollars.
NotaCPA
Watching the improvements in China, I suspect my spinal cord injury would have been cured or treatable years ago if the US hadn't banned the research. I spent a decade being able to walk and 3 decades in a wheelchair, and I probably have another 3 decades to go. It would be nice to stand at my full height and look people in the eye or down at them at 6'3. Dancing would be lovely, too, before I die.
fuckyouyoufuckingfuckedupfuckingfuck
Omg can I please have it 🥲

Does it hurt already?

Put it in Ted Cruz!

Seems a little cruel to the lab grown spine, don't you think?

Yep, that's definitely not what they did. Popular mechanics has become such clickbait, barely even worth reading. They did not grow a spine

It's probably the spine of a grown human

I know, it was just a notochord, but still something is better than nothing

People died today because they were denied basic healthcare. I appreciate your effort, OP, but I can't work up the energy to be glad about this. I'm tired.
Sonicschilidogs
People die every day, every where, from a litany of things. Many of them are a tragedy, yes, but scientific advancement will ease or eliminate those scenarios, so I see it as a net - positive, and I wanted to dunk of conservatives in the process. This research helps us understand how to repair spinal cord injuries, which will impact thousands. I know you are tired, it's okay to rest my friend, but the fight goes on always for a better tomorrow, trials and set backs be damned.
alienwax
Hell yeah! There's nothing cooler than boosting others' morale, especially in the face of incredible adversity. People like you change hearts and minds for the better. You're awesome 🤘

I thought of Worf immediately too.

Just reading the chapter of Changes where Harry breaks his back today too made me think of Worf.

I mean we can grow a whole human in vitro. That way you get a spine and a lot of other spare parts as well! /s

I read that book too! "Never Let Me Go"

The only thing I'm excited about for RFK is he supports stem cell treatment, which has already been proven to cure Type 1 Diabetes.
terribleferalfox
As a tetraplegic from an incomplete spinal injury, any advancement in stem cell therapy would be amazing! There are so many issues suffered by people all over the world that could be treated or, at the very least, be minimized by stem cell therapy.

sortofkindamadbutnotreally
Some of his takes on the amount of unhealthy nonsense in food arent too bad either. Its funny, he's absolutely batshit and only right like 30% of the time and yet he's still the best person in Trump's cabinet when compared to his other picks.
rowzdowr
I don't know, that one plus is gonna have to do some heavy lifting for his vaccine and HIV/AIDS denialism.

How are you going to do science without electricity, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/doug-ford-ontario-premiers-meet-justin-trudeau-1.7407948

Something, something, broken clocks.
manhands
No. Republicans will block it. He’s only bad. There’s no upside.
matshelge
Every time I hear about something RFK believes in, I turn into Homer buying the cursed Krusty doll. "That's good!" "That's Bad!" "That's good!" - Can I go now?
Kaumie
its too bad that he wants to stick disabled people in camps
LaronX
In selected cases and we don't know if permanently
BullHalsey
Honestly RFK would genuinely be a good pick for head of the EPA. Hell if it wasn't for his anti-vac stance I'd be fine with him as is given he generally takes the European tack on things.
Kaumie
He also wants to stick disabled people in "nature camps"
BullHalsey
TBF I get his reasoning behind it. However it's one of those things I don't think could ever be done because it'll be abused in every conceivable way possible no matter how you try and implement it.
wingineer
He's not confirmed yet, and if Trump won't get his first choice for AG (Matt Gaetz) I don't see why he must get his first choice for HHS. Write your Senators and encourage your acquaintances to do the same.

No dr oz!!! No No No

My senators are (checks notes) John Kennedy and Bill Kassidy.
wingineer
And mine are John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. Yeah, I expect them to do the wrong thing, but I'll at least ask them to do better.
suckstoyourauntie
Growing a backbone, feeling it in your heart, or in your gut; these are all euphemisms for things that happen in your brain. And RFK had a worm in his.

Nah
Maybe.... MAYBE..... MAYBE! If he was appointed to head the EPA, as he was an environmental lawyer, but still, no, not really
GarmBlack
I mean.... no, he's not, even relative to others. He has no training that prepares him to do anything health related beyond "muh research." He's not a total dunce as some on the team are, but he's still wholly unqualified to touch public health.
PurifiedInTheWatersOfLakeMinnetonka
No, the fuck, he isn’t. 🤨
PurifiedInTheWatersOfLakeMinnetonka
Just absolutely fucking LOVE when someone blurts out crazy shit, gets slammed in the comments, then deletes their comment and hides under a rock. /s
C’mon man, own it. Learn from it and GROW. Don’t be ashamed to be wrong.
MKUltraMega
That word "relative" is doing some heavy lifting there, partner
knieveljaja
As an ID doc...the guy doesn't understand even the simplest of studies
Monkeynutsjoe
With his history as an enviromental lawyer, the EPA yes. HHS.... no.
huffnpuff72
I recently read that period blood is a good source of stem cells. If RFK hears that there will be some dramas.
coffeeandprozac
We can harvest stem cells from the female uterus. I'll gladly donate mine if it helps the sanctimonious shut the fuck up and let the scientists get on with it.
Youhavinagiraffe
In cases where a nutcase has one good opinion it often turns out that this is the only opinion they are willing to change their mind about
Targe0
He's got some other actual points. Like that the US eats too much processed food. But his takes on Drugs and infections are all tin foil hats vill.
AFallenDragon
Part of the reason we eat so much processed food is because most peeps don't have the time nor energy to actually cook.
Targe0
There's lots of fast to prepare foods that don't take long to cook or much energy that aren't heavily processed.
AFallenDragon
I know, but I also know things aren't that simple. You also have to have the time-money to buy said food & the time-energy to cook said food. When I can go to the store & buy a processed pizza for $5, it takes 30 minutes to heat up & is 2-3 meals then that's I'm gonna chose. Why? Because It's cheap, filling & doesn't take much to make.
Youhavinagiraffe
That's almost a "nice things are nice" opinion though where everyone thinks that... and sometimes don't even mean the same by it since "processed food" is not a clear cut definition. Cottage cheese, whey protein and natural Greek yogurt are all "processed". The important thing is what you are prepared to do about and, if that doesn't include penalising and regulating companies that make unhealthy processed food, then you're in favour of the status quo.
LanceSackless
Big fucking deal, i grew one in my body, WHEN I WAS A FUCKING BABY. Come back when you do something impressive
NumptyDumptyLump
Lovely. +1

I grew one in my baby. I had two spines at one point! Beat that

Sure! Give me a few days and no witnesses and I can go collect plenty of spines!
