The study which popularised the idea that vaccines cause autism, published by disgraced ex-doctor Andrew Wakefield, was based only on the opinions of some parents who thought there might be a link. Or in some cases, parents who didn't think that, but who Andrew said they did. None of the countless experiments since have suggested any kind of link between vaccines and autism. And when Andrew himself was given the chance to test for a link, he refused to do so.

It is extremely difficult, scientifically, to prove that something _isn't_. You cannot cite available data for something that doesn't exist; this is why you always see language like 'has known to cause', or 'is likely'; they're going by likelihood, even if said likelihood is 99.99% or 00.01%. There's no way for an absolute judgement. This is even more difficult to prove things like this, where they conveniently lack a control group or any data on the patients condition before the vaccination.

As it came out, his reasons for doing so were: 1- the test was being financed by a group of personal injury lawyers. 2- half of the kids in the test already had developmental conditions prior to getting vaccinated. He was trying to push his own, proprietary MMR (the formulary in question), so there was a substantial monetary gain on his part. The 'studies' he pushed were withdrawn, he and his research were completely discredited, and he lost his medical license. There's no need to disprove that vaccines cause autism, because it was not only never proven; but it was never even _observed_, which is one of the first steps in the scientific method, before you can even state a hypothesis.

Hundreds of studies have proved no link. Thimerosal/mercury based vaccines were of concern but the science is clear and they no longer use mercury. Vaccines work. They just do. It's been proven science for as long as this nation has existed. George Washington innoculated his troops for smallpox. We don't have polio. To be clear, thiomersal also does not cause autism. It IS toxic, but the amount that used to be in vaccines has never been shown to have any negative health outcomes. It was mainly discontinued to placate the anti-vax crazies, and we can all see how well that worked out.
