they have signal for a reason. signal deletes messages automatically after a set time, is encrypted, and is known for not saving backup info. Basically they're using it so there's no way to trace back anything they say/do/plan like they normally would have in government so they can't be prosecuted for any illegal activity
TheImgurWarsMadeMe
Yeah, people are looking at this all wrong. I would trust a properly setup Signal group to be perfectly fine, encryption-wise, for that type of conversation. It's not appropriate because it's being used as an untracked, non-FOIA-able medium for discussing topics without the fear of repercussions when things inevitably hit the fan. The adding of a reporter was DUI incompetence. The use of Signal is a malicious choice to weaken accountability and further erode confidence in the system.
FelonyRaptor
Exactly. And it's not something you all can joke away with funny videos. Please do more, for the rest of the planet?
admiralawesome4213
politely, what the fuck else am I supposed to do? I regularly call my congressman, protest, inform everyone I can, etc. like I understand the frustration from people going "get off your ass and do something" but a lot of us are and it's clear the message is not getting through/is ignored, and unless there is a full on civil war or countrywide protest of significant number to oust the current regime, there's little in the way most of us can do. once they realized they can ignore the courts 1/2
admiralawesome4213
without real repercussions, democracy in the US began to collapse and they can get away with anything bc they know all they'll get is some bad press and a stern warning. 2/2
FelonyRaptor
Yes, I understand. And they've realized it already, no courts or laws or judges are gonna stop them now.
What you all can do is
"a full on civil war or countrywide protest of significant number"
admiralawesome4213
cool. I, some random dude working a low end job with very little sway or control over the hearts, minds, and view of the American people; will get right on that /s

I don't want it to get lost in the headlines, but Signal is perfectly fine for secure communications but the device, network, or hell room you're in may be compromised. You can use Signal to secure the communication in transit but it isn't gonna stop someone from looking over your shoulder. And uhh... it definitely doesn't work if you add someone to the chat. It's like using an armored car between two cardboard boxes.
shawnmilo
Yeah, Signal is secure. This is like saying paper isn't secure because you made a bunch of photocopies of secret documents and gave one to a journalist.
NomadFeetWanderingToes
It's only secure against casual hackers, but nation states with a large amount resources have probably penetrated it. The real reason they're using it that's not being talked about is that there trying to circumvent the public records act and FOIA. They are probably using Signal for alot of other things. Things much more evil and illegal.
NomadFeetWanderingToes

EvilBilbo
I suppose I should have mentioned that I meant that for individuals, not governments. These fucking clowns should absolutely not have been using it but I don't want their dipshittery to turn people off of using Signal in their personal communications as though Signal is the problem in this situation.

I don't know. It may be a little over their head.
unluckyandbored
No, the way we should be dealing with them is putting them in handcuffs for their uncountable crimes against the nation and putting them in prison for the rest of their miserable lives.
FelonyRaptor
With funny videos on social media? Dude, they are counting on ya'll to be doing just that. You do realize that changes absolutely nothing and they keep on doing wth they feel like?
KittyKlimt6
No. This is (more or less) how we should raise our fucking sons so that the world overcomes those war mongering patriarchs who did not have this upbringing and have no idea how to self soothe or regulate their feelings and need constant othering to keep whatever kind of identity made it through a childhood of absent fathers, be it through rape, war or killing. You need to learn those skills from an early age. You CAN learn it. Now it's just useless.
BrusselSpout
Are they Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?
BrusselSpout
No
suchpun
No, they are not stupid, they are evil. They know exactly what they are doing.
Underestimating our enemies is how we ended up in this situation. (Also it is weird ableist narrative that someone would commit evil acts because they lack intelligence, lots or intellectual challenged people are very kind people.)
PrecogFrogOnALog
I'd say they're more careless and/or reckless than unintelligent. If they'd taken half an extra second before hitting send to check who was in the chat, they may have noticed there was an extra one who wasn't supposed to be.
I'd like to know where all the "but her emails" people are about this...
eggmuffin
The cruelty is the point.
The stupidity and ignorance and lies and flagrant disregard for observable reality is a tool. It is a weapon with which to attack the concept of informed consent, rendering discourse circular and unproductive because no one wishing to speak the truth can get to their point without first laying a strong foundation and covering all flanks against ambush.
It's exhausting by design.
It is also a shield that protects them from criticism. See: "They're so stupid!"
PickleForBreakfast
Current events don't seem to support your 'not stupid' hypothesis. How about both stupid and evil?

GET LA CHANCLA!!!!!
bubblegum555552000
No, that would only bring us down to their level. OK maybe chancla first, THEN send them back to preschool where they belong.
Yellowchopsticks
The past few years have already shown that public humiliation isn't enough. We might even have to go even further and break out the jumper cables.

I fucking love her. She's so much fun.
My wife and I frequently tell each other (and the cats) to catch a bubble.
GusTheBard
I used to teach preschool back in the mid 2000's, I've never heard this term.
I really like it though.
LateNightBunnyParty
I taught 'til '07 and it had just started entering the lexicon, but I always did an imaginary bag of marshmallows.

Catch a bubble: keep your mouth closed as if you've caught a bubble and are trying to keep it from escaping.

So not in a Roman Catholic Church kinda sense?
JoeT85
Thanks for that bubble explanation
LateNightBunnyParty
I used to teach the little folks like she does, and I'd pass around an imaginary bag of marshmallows to hold. After I was done speaking, I'd say "Okay, NOW you can eat your marshmallow," and they'd all make a big deal of pretending to chew and and swallow it.
Wapusk
Awesome!

LateNightBunnyParty
The teacher pretends to blow a bunch of bubbles, then tells the kids to catch one and hold it in their mouth. It's a fun, imaginative way to get them to shut the hell up for a few minutes so you can speak and have their attention. I always did the variation where I passed around a bag of imaginary marshmallows, but there's tons of similar devices.
tarnok
She's really good and I don't know why but I'm getting like, triggered listening to her? Like it's upsetting me and I don't know why
Dobster
For me it's that I miss the comfort of having the facts set out for me, rather than having to guess why everyone's faces had changed to sad faces.
bearstrap
I think that's part of the fun. If a grownass woman is talking to you like that, it feels.... condescending.
MangoisaFatPootinsBiiitch
You know you've been a bad boy
bubblegum555552000
She's talking to our world leaders as though they're preschoolers. And it's suitable.
KellyCrazyCatLadyinTraining
It means that grown ups have been talking down to you like you were an infant long past when it was appropriate to do so. Like, I was 12 when I stopped my Mom from spanking me and angrily told her, āNo! If I did something wrong we can talk about it like adults!ā She laughed but then used her words to explain what she thought I done wrong, and she realized I was growing up and no longer a little kid, and could now be reasoned with. In my Momās defense; 1/2
KellyCrazyCatLadyinTraining
Iām neurodivergent and so I was always a slow leaner, especially compared to my older sibling, so my poor Mom just did not have the patience to deal with three kids, one of whom was intellectually behind what my over achieving Mom felt was āacceptable.ā Itās not my momās fault; her Mom (my grandmother) was an absolute bitch and made my Mom feel like a failure because I didnāt excel like my older sibling. Fuck my grandma for how she treated my Mom. My Mom deserved better in her youth. 2/2
KellyCrazyCatLadyinTraining
Hug your parents, people. My Mom never got the psychological help she should have gotten when growing up, so I had to be the marriage counselor for my parents once I was in high school. Itās hilarious how often I have to help my parents learn better communication skills, considering how highly educated they both are, lol. I guess learning good communication skills isnāt part of getting a college degree, whether itās a bachelorās, masterās, doctorate, or nursing degree.
