Ok if you go during the 5 summer months expect flocks of tourists. These pics must've been taken in deep covid or winter. Book way in advance. Be quick about it. All these islands are likely to collapse under the sheer volume of tourists.

You're right, once it hits the wind, it'd yeet itself into the ocean. Yo, how about a ski-lift kind of thing? Metal cable from shore with a box kind of thing attached to put goods into, running on the same theory as a ski-lift. Unless it's got some dick ripping level of wind, that might work?

Why can we not just work on making the places with live just as nice? I mean not everywhere is going to have oceans but unfettered capitalism has created the fugliest places on Earth. Driving by 50 gas stations 15 car dealerships and 10 mostly empty parking lots in a 5 mile trip.

Crete is my favorite place in the world! I've only briefly been to the southern party of the island after hiking the Samaria gorge but everything north east and west are all gorgeous with fresh produce and amazing seafood. Not to mention it's super cheap! Santorini was beautiful but way too crowded/ touristy and the fruit not as fresh and tasty. It never felt authentic and homey like Crete. Very few people actually live on the island most are only there as tourist season workers.

Santorini was nice. Oía was packed. We stayed in Imerovigli which was not. I still have to get to Cyprus and Crete.

I liked Crete a lot more than I thought I would. Liked Cyprus too. Rhodes, on the other hand...you'd have to pay me a king's ransom to go back.

My visit to Rhodes is more than 20 years ago. Crete is a couple of years. Maybe things have changed. We rented a car and drove all the way around Rhodes. Every meal was bad. In Crete, the worst was kind of ok. Mostly it was good.

There you go. My trip to both was in 2019. Loved Rhodes, and loved Crete for its beauty but found everyone was a lot less lovely, and the food was markedly worse

Food was expensive and bad. Nothing much to see. Crete had lots of things. Rhodes...a lot less. Not as pretty. Beaches weren't very good. I liked Rhodes City. But mostly, it felt like a place where Brits went to get wasted and sunburned. Badly.

As someone born and raised in Rhodes and studied for 6 years in Crete, I would say it's possible some of your choices were unfortunate. Having lived in both, Rhodes is by FAR better. If you ever go again, I'm more than happy to make some suggestions for you. Some places like faliraki and orfanidou are basically what you described with Brits getting wasted, but there are sooo many other things to see/do.

We did rent a car and go off the beaten track, but never found anywhere we really enjoyed. But I am sorry to diss a place you hold so dear. And thank you. Alas, I'll never get my wife to go there, I think. Not in the summer, anyway, and that's when we have time off. She can't stand heat.

I’ve been to Greece a few times, and looking at these pics brought me right back because it is just as Gorgeous as these photos represent. It’s a tourist destination, so crowds can be expected, but it’s all about timing and location.

Indeed. But I prefer end of May / beginning of June. In fact, I just returned from there. It is still a bit green and not yet totally dry. You have to live with the colder water, though. And there are lots of islands to choose from that are not overcrowded at all.

Greece has 227 inhabited islands I'm sure you can find less crowded places to go looking like that, but the real problem this summer is that EVERYTHING is SO EXPENSIVE. It's so overpriced that I would recommend everyone to skip Greece and go to Croatia, Montenegro, or even Albania. Great beaches with reasonable prices.

I was extensively researching moving to Crete Greece. The pros were English speaking, fairly low crime, and I thought cost. Would you recommend moving to any of your above - Croatia, Montenegro or Albania? I'm female, solo, pretty new to travel.

I think Crete is the best thing Greece has to offer right now. A complete package to whatever you might be searching for. From food, nightlife, and welcoming people to outstanding places and beaches. I mean Crete has different vibes and vegetation depending on where you are, the food is glorious, and the beaches plentiful and beautiful. What else do you need?

Croatia is safe and fairly inexpensive - over the past 5 years it definitely has gone up in cost and also they swapped to Euro this year. I think the northern part is safer as a solo female. I've heard negative things about Split and Dubravnik but personally have never been to those cities so can't give much advice there. But gorgeous coast / islands that are very friendly and look like this in real life. Zadar, Rab, Pag, Krk, Sibenik, and Losinj are all great coastal. Zagreb inland.

I havn't yet. I've only been on one vacation ever really, and it was a cruise to the Bahamas. Loved the island time, had my fill of the ship from that trip. I was going to ask if you were from the US, but I just checked out your posts. I'm guessing yes and I'm jealous of your Rome trip! :) Looked amazing!

Yes! It was amazing and was my first time traveling abroad. We did it for what I think was really cheap. Found cheap Airbnbs, waited to book flights until the price was good and used RyanAir to go from Spain to Italy. The most expensive part were the taxis/eu urber, so next time I'll try to learn to use public trans
