Lol. Also, fuck Denuvo, you resource hogging crap!

DRM only hurts legitimate customers.
Piracy is preservation.

They are just going to have to get used to it.

DRM is so funny because not only does it do nothing to prevent the piracy, it actually means the pirated copy is a better product
VodkaReindeer
Denuvo was very effective at preventing piracy until the end of 2025 when hypervisor cracks appeared.
theduckening
Before Ubisoft kills the game and fully deletes it from libraries
FreePalestineAndTheWorldFromIsrael
At least it comes on a disc, unlike Grand Theft Scam 6
ChazzK
God I remember when Denuvo and SecuROM and others first popped up. The number of people pirating games skyrocketed... Because they had bought the game legitimately and **THE GOD DAMN MALWARE THEY CALLED SECURITY WOULDN'T LET THEM PLAY THE GAME THEY ACTUALLY BOUGHT,** so they had to download the cracks just to play it.

Frankly, I'm all for pirating this particular game not just for thematic reasons, but also because Ubi have just gone and gutted the studio as soon as it shipped.

DRM doesn't stop piracy, it just annoys and sometimes blocks legitimate customers, which only further fuels people pirating things so then they aren't constantly irritated by issues with DRM. I bought Far Cry 6, but then "alternatively obtained" it to actually be able to play it without getting crashed out of my single player game every time Ubisofts servers decided to go potato mode every 15 minutes. Lesson learned is that obtaining things alternatively yields a better experience.
ElbowDeep
Oh and Far Cry 4, they added achievements in steam, right? Reinstalled for the dopamine hit of getting them all, except they all unlocked automatically on game launch, can't use console to reset them, can't use Steam Achievement Manager to re-lock them, dopamine hit entirely stolen.

well, if ai didn't write their code
then ai wouldn't be able to crack it
rhalm
Yes, they clearly used AI to program Denuvo when it came out 12 years ago /s
And it doesn't matter who or what wrote the code, a multitude of methods and programs can crack it, including AI.
L0rdinquisit0r
Denuvo aint AI written. the pirates use a backdoor built into chips to just ignour the DRM. a few know know to rewrite the code to remove it altogether. thats the one you want to play. it has been proven that the pirate version minus the DRM runs faster with higher FPS than officail version. why? because the fecking DRM eats 5% min of cpu with constant files checks. you are buying a game the publisher has poisoned
kInADress
"you are buying a game the publisher has poisoned" I am not buying it and as a matter of fact, I'm not pirating it either. Way too many indies to support instead :)

mrthewhitee
Denuvo was never meant to stop crackers really. It's two functions are to create an obstacle casual gamers will never put the effort into overcoming and slow down those who will put in the effort.
It is bad for them if they're not slowing down those who will put in the effort but it's not the end of DRM. Even in the past, a success is just a few days of no crack being available.
marsilies
Regular DRM already stopped the first type of piracy. Nobody cracked games themselves for decades, everyone just waits for a pirated copy to show up on a torrent site. Denuvo was always about slowing down the cracking until after the launch windows.
Cataleast
Yeah, most of this stuff is meant to delay the cracks, nothing more. They know there's no foolproof method and Denuvo is expensive to license too. Basically, they're betting that the time it takes for pirated releases to show up is long enough to provoke people into forking overy the $$$, which will offset the costs of licensing the DRM and more. And Denuvo was really, really solid for a long time; it's only somewhat recently that a consistent method of circumventing it was discovered.
Jarjarthejedi
In the past a success was a few days of no crack, maybe, but here we have /negative/ days before a DRM crack. If that continues, it's a complete failure.
mrthewhitee
You missed my point though. I was pointing out that a couple days is only a small part of its purpose.
The larger effect is being an obstacle casual gamers will not even bother to overcome. And it's still that.
fformulaa
Pretty soon it'll just be renting time from from their gaming servers to remote into to play! There was that platform back in the day but bandwidth was an issue? Don't recall
MelfsAcidArrow
I still use GeForceNow - mostly because I have a mac and it’s the easiest way to play AAA games
MelfsAcidArrow
Oh I am on ethernet so there is almost no ping. Certainly nothing detectable in the games I play.
cyno01
Good luck w/ that, my internet hasnt gotten any faster in the last decade...
ElbowDeepInAPoliceState
Yours hasn't, but much of the rest of the world has. It's a business model that will only ever appeal to the same sort of market that mobile games and sports titles have on lock already, because the "Super Hardcore Gamer" scene will never accept the inherent latency issues and degradation of control
Muffyns
Probably still pirate it. Dead mmos have retro servers. There was a zelda game once played over the radio that was never released but you can pirate that too
pancreas
a 200+ mhz, 1ms monitor is pointless if you have 50+ ping on every input. and you can forget about any competitive multiplayer
Skeevethegreat
Sega Channel?
Cataleast
Google had Stadia, Sony had PlayStation Now (now a part of PlayStation Plus), Nvidia has GeForce Now, Microsoft has XBOX Cloud Gaming.
Before all that, there was G-cluster, Gaikai, and OnLive in the early 2000s to around 2015-ish.
huey9k
And before THAT, all the way back in 1994, they had the SEGA Channel.
Cataleast
That wasn't cloud gaming in the same sense as Stadia et al, but rather it was an online content delivery system in that it downloaded the game data into the Saturn adapter's RAM, also meaning the game was deleted when the console was turned off. It must've been pretty clunky to use. After all, games ran pretty much instantly back then, but with Sega Channel, you had to wait for the game to download every time you wanted to play something. Many games were stripped down to fit into the RAM too.
Cataleast
Oh yeah, I did try PS Now at one point. Played a bit of Bloodborne and lemme tell ya, a game with fast-paced combat and small parry windows is REALLY not great with the cloud gaming input lag. I was at it for a couple of hours and I reckon I hit maybe 2 parries during that whole time. Gran Turismo was a lot more tolerable :)
Lutki
Google stadia worked like that, but Google killed it after it not being particularly successful. There are other companies you can rent a remote PC from, but they all have similar limitations. Namely latency, like the frames have to be sent over the Internet, then your brain makes a decision, then you push a button, then it goes back over the Internet to the server, the server registers the input, then has to send the result of the input back to you. It is fine for idle games and story heavy 1/
epithymetic
GEForce Now seems to have solved that problem somehow
theduckening
if you're old enough, you may remember OnLive too
Skeevethegreat
If you're truly old enough, you'd remember Sega Channel
Roune
I loved the idea of the stadia but omfg did it suck for most games
OldnSpicey
You are describing remote application virtualization (app streaming). I'm actually a Citrix Engineer, it's pretty cool stuff but yeah latency is a huge issue.
Lutki
Single player experiences, but it goes from infuriating to unplayable in multiplayer games, or anything requiring precise inputs like precision platformers, racing games, fps.2/2
8uttplug
I played through God of War 1 &2 on PS+ years ago. Who boy is it rough even with ethernet connection. It's straight up easier in this day and age to play them under emulation.
FrenziiTheIMP
Yeh, I used Xbox game pass to access WH40K: Darktide through game streaming. The latency was awful, still managed to reach max level with the 4 starting classes
Xendrash
this is why I liked those platforms. I never cared for multiplayer or platformers of racing. The last good racing game was Burnout Paradise, fight me!
neithermenoryou
These days the modern option are cloud play like Geforce Now from nvidia, but all the big console makers (Nintendo, sony, Xbox), Abd Microsoft for PC games all offer the same. Supposedly it works pretty decently with fiber and if you're close to one of their data enters to get <18ms latency for the roundtrip, but that's rare. Personally I only use network internal streaming via steam so I can play things on my couch via tablet and the 3ms latency is perfectly fine for almost everything.
BenYourFriend
I know 18ms is fast, but that’s still pretty bad compared to just playing the game locally
neithermenoryou
Of course, but it's apparently good enough for many.
tidepool
Amazon Luna on the fire stick works like this. It’s not too latent (but I have fiber so maybe that’s why) but I do get a lot of “the controller isn’t connected” while using it and stuff. It does have a latency though and it definitely can be frustrating.
freakdiablo
IIRC Denuvo hasn't been a 100% effective DRM for a while. It's just another negative for those paying for a copy.
I haven't sailed the seven ISPs in over a decade and will 100% see it as a con. Excessive DRM, excessive account requirements - I've avoided buying games for both.
So in my case, DRM is the direct cause of a lost sale.
marsilies
Denuvo's position is that it'll get cracked eventually, but it should halt a pirated copy from appear for at least a few weeks after launch. A pirated copy appearing BEFORE the game's official release is a big blow to their value proposition.

Black Flag was awesome, and I would *absolutely* play the remaster. But ain't no way I'm paying $80 + DLC for a remaster of a title I already own. And absolutely no way I'm putting up with Denuvo.
Dear Ubisoft: if you respect me as a customer, I'll keep giving you money. If you don't, I won't. It's that simple. I'm even fine with $80 games (when they're new titles, and actually cost that much to produce.)
Feralkyn
Someone else linked this https://www.gamesindustry.biz/layoffs-begin-at-ubisoft-barcelona-following-assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced-launch and I gotta say that's reason enough not to pay them a goddamn cent

It's honestly better than most new games I've played lately. If you're a fan of the original, it's worth playing it again as a modern game. It doesn't cost any more than other AAA games, and it's just as good.
DocTanner
That's fair. Still not accepting Denuvo though.
UNHchabo
Don't EVEN pirate games from the AAA publishers, they don't deserve your attention. Support indie studios with your time AND your money.
My favorite games of the last several years are Celeste, Outer Wilds, Slay the Princess, Receiver 2, Tunic, and Hollow Knight Silksong.
JaimeLannistersRightHand
Bruh, if I wanna play a AAA game, I'm sailing the seas... I'm not paying 60-70€ for an okay game anymore... I'll buy from indie studios, yes, but sometimes AAA games tickle an itch I didn't know I had
kInADress
GOG and indies, that's my way
MoopsyLD
no no you are getting it wrong. ALWAYS pirate from AAA publishers and ALWAYS Pay for indie game. you are taking money from them to give to the indie studios. Video games are a culmination of several peoples work. Don't bash the work they did by not playing it. play it but don't give the publisher any money.
UNHchabo
My biggest example would be Hogwarts Legacy. JKR makes money based off of the continual fandom that people retain for the HP franchise, and that's what allows for instance Universal Studios to have a section of their theme parks devoted to the franchise. And she sees piracy of her work as implicit support for her transphobia.
So to me there's no amount of "support the workers by supporting the game" that's justified through either purchasing or pirating it.
rhalm
Just pirate everything and save all your money then.
MoopsyLD
no cause indie studios actually do amazing work. when Silksong released, Pirates actively discouraged pirating cause the game was so cheap and worth it. sure there will always be pirates but if a game can cause pirates to say not to pirate it then its worth listening to.
rhalm
AAA studios can do amazing work too. Why should the game's budget/distribution determine whether it should be pirated or not?
LicensedAdHominem
This: reward art, fuck the product.
Skuggen
The worst thing about Outer Wilds is that I always need a couple of seconds for my brain to decide if we're talking about Outer Wilds (which is great) or Outer Worlds (which is... fine.)
Feralkyn
I never remember which is which.
PrincessAris
I have the same problem with Darksiders and Darkstalkers.
battery1979
Speaking of which, Darkstalkers really deserves a sequel. Or include the characters in Street Fighter.
Cyanide555
Darkstalkers x sf there. I'd like an update too, less keen on the crossover though
UNHchabo
Yeah, when Outer Worlds got announced the studio behind Outer Wilds already had several years of slowly building up hype at industry trade shows, so they figured it was too late to change their name. Outer Wilds got released just five months before Outer Worlds.
I've heard Outer Worlds is "Fallout but in space", for all the good and bad implied by that statement.
mohammadbinsalmon
its fallout without any real coherent structure to the artistic part of the game
Skuggen
It sort of tries to be, but it simply doesn't have anywhere near the depth of the Fallout games, and it's somehow much more forgettable. I still had fun playing it, mind, just got bored before finishing it.
Infinias
Nothing to explore, no side plots that I remember. You could show me pictures of Fallout 3 and New Vegas and I probably can tell you which place it is and what happens there. For Outer worlds I need to verify that the screenshot would be from that game so forgettable it was.
Skuggen
Yeah, that was my recollection of it as well. You'd go through an area for one particular quest, and then you were done with it.
Skullwriter
Oh shit! You reminded me that I need to review that game! Outer Wilds, that is, Outer Worlds was... indeed... uh.... fine.
RocketKokket
Outer wilds is fantastic. I was playing it earlier today for first time in forever. I missed it. Outer worlds is fun for what it is. If you want fallout in space you’ll enjoy it. It’s fallout in space
AtmaDarkwolf
yup. Outer worlds was... a game. LOL Was a step up (A HUGE step up) from the boondoggle that was / is starfield, and was actually fun, but ya, not really boundary pushing or a good story. It was just that. A game.
Skuggen
I was _expecting_ Outer Worlds to be Fallout in space, but it was a letdown.
UNHchabo
By the way, for Outer Wilds on PC there's a vibrant modding community that's more than tripled the time I put into the original game and the DLC.
I'll give the caveats that the quality varies from "terrible" to "pretty good for an amateur", and the writing is literal fan fiction. But if you're ok with that then it's a nice way to revisit the game. :)

No game is worth $80. You trying to justify it makes CEOs horny. Movies also have hundreds to thousands of people working on it for months to years. The so-called DLC is just outfits and maps and weapons and shit. No story content, missions, or anything required to play the game. You don't need to buy any of it

*shrug* I can't bring myself to be upset about stuff like this. If you want it buy it.. it's not needed in any way for the enjoyment of the game. For some people there's value and they'll buy. It isn't $80 and it has been rebuilt entirely from the ground up; it isn't just an upscaled version of the 360 original. How did you manage to look at the Steam page and miss that it was $60, not $80?
rhalm
Can someone explain why I am being downvoted for correcting false information?
NotSomoneElse68
By being kind of a dick about it?
rhalm
What about it was dick-ish?

Has it occurred to you that they might not even live in the same country as you?
pandemicmodedad
From the fact it costs them 60, they are Americans and are ignorant of other countries.

Gamers just want to be upset all the time instead of shutting the fuck up and actually playing video games.
Regis500
Baw, I think I hit a nerve there lol, have Fun actually playing video games instead of being chronically unhappy about your supposed hobby, I know I will on my full digital ps5, get triggered by that too hosers.
GratuaCuun
Fuck off - I listed the cost wrong by accident - I'm human. It happens. That doesn't change the obscene dlc cost and their shitty treatment of the devs who *made* the damn game

Wah.

The DLC is just cosmetic stuff that is so over the top that it breaks immersion. The original had the same kind of DLC as this one, so I don't understand why people are getting so upset over it. Just don't buy the fancy outfits. The ones you earn in the game are cool enough.
