you dont know the metallurgy. you dont know the physics. you probably do know that spiny magnet near iron sends a current down copper. that, and the knowledge that pursuing it would eventually work, would be enough to seriously propel electrification forwards. It looks pretty close to a Great Circle, so should be the shortest distance, but the atmospheric winds would not be kind. Also a good reason why the initial settlers from England didn't go that way :)

A path that goes through a great circle is not always the shortest distance. It is the shortest distance if you travel less than 180° around it; otherwise you're going the long way :)

Nah, I'm pretty sure that line in #12 is a proper "straight" line as in a great circle, not as in a Mercator projection (rhumb line, or loxodrome). Otherwise it wouldn't get near Antarctica and then away from it; it'd just spiral around it going further and further south.

If you have a globe around, grab a piece of string and stretch it from New York to Madrid. Or to Beijing. You'll see that if you pull tightly it doesn't go along the 40°N parallel (despite all those cities being in the same parallel) but instead it bends north. So the shortest path isn't "going east all the way" (which would draw a straight line in a map projection), but instead it combs towards the north/south pole.
