This mother's day, give the best gift of all

Time for my annual mothers day rant.

My mother had pulmonary embolisms. Her heart was giving her blood clots that got trapped in the spongy tissue of the lungs and made breathing very difficult. A heart transplant wouldn't exactly cure her but it would give her enough time to live a full and normal life.

We knew she could go any time. She made sure we all knew where the binder was that had all the numbers to call, in order, when she passed. She also put the log in info for everything from her bank, to the utilities, to Netflix; she worried dad would be a mess without her. We were so relieved when the hospital called and said she was so close to the top of the organ list that she had to move into a hospital suite.

They gave her a move in date about a week away and things were pretty normal. One day she bumps a guy's car on the road while running errands. They pulled over to the side and he takes one look at her and says "jeez lady, are you ok?" "Something's wrong" was the last thing she said. She hated the idea that someone else had to die so she could get a new heart but she went on to help 7 other people live better healthier lives. She was 54, never met half her grand kids but it's nice to know that her eyes might one day see someone else's.

If you aren't an organ donor go fix that. If there'd been a few more maybe my mom might still be alive. I promise by the time they take them you don't need them anymore.
