After a decade of kit homebrew beer and cider, have tried doing my own recipe and from grain! This is where the LOVE begins (and the first of many hours). 5kg of milled grain.
Had to get a big pot for this first step. 32L aluminium pot. Cheapest I could find, from the market. Two na-na’s for scale.
Heating the Strike Water to 70 degrees. The pot had a false bottom and I added to a hop bag to help get the steeped grain out of the first cook. Not effective at all. Note for next time: buy a full sized BrewBag.
Steeped grain at between 60 and 70 degrees for 1hr.
After separating the grain (there is a good term for this but I cannot remember) the wort is boiled for 1hr.
Finer filter to make the batch clearer
40g total hop pellet weight (2x 20g varieties ). Brewed and added I will dry hop another variety later.
All ready for the yeast, but has to cool down.
Wort selfie.
Later that evening, all wrapped up, yeast added and bubbling away!
8 days like this and I can then bottle. Looks like it be about 9% alcohol!

Nice one. 9% is a bit on the loopy side. Missus is doing part boils for now, latest is a Warsteiner clone that looks promising. Have fun.

Don't mash in your Brew kettle, buy a cheap drink cooler that picnics serve lemonade from and a mash-tun conversion kit. When you slowly

Pour water through the grain bed it will filter out all of that cloudy mess and you will have a much clearer Brew.
