I got that set for my sixth birthday, and still have it! Cool!
ticklishtulip
I 'inherited' that set in my parents split. Whose laughing now, Dad?
LamePotato
A voice that was both as young and as ancient as springtime.
longdanz
You could make about 4 movies outta that... wait a sec
sandbreather
I got this for you
swedishpancakeswithlingonberries
I had the box set where each book was a different color, yellow, blue, green, and red.
prufock
You can't fool us! That's not $5, that's books!
mistersteel
As a collector of lotr editions, I can tell you that's the best shape I've ever seen that set before.
The pages are yellowed from age, but they don't look like they've been touched!
skybound98
This. And all I could get was a teeny tiny salt shaker.
SearchingForMrBean
If I remember correctly this set was printed during a period where some publishers printed the books without permission. Good find!!
RyanMcFlyin
Nice! I found a similar box set last Christmas
ChuckNorrisOpproves
So, do you like Battletech?
I have all but ONE book, ugh!
CarbyAu
As a battletech nerd from the 80's I want to say something witty and usefully engaging. As it is all I can say is "Hi!", nice collection.
I first got hooked when I found a Mechwarrior book (Ghost of Winter) in a thrift store when I was in middle school. Hooked ever since!
Fullmetalmecha
WHERE ARE ALL OF THESE MAGICAL THRIFT STORES WITH AMAZING STUFF

Those have never been read. Once you read them all, the pages fan out, and you can't fit them back in the box.
You may be correct! Return of the King is a little bit bent along the spine but it doesn't look like reading wear.
Poltergeist94
Oh man I love the ring poem in that. "In brightest day, and blackest night, let no evil escape my sight..."
itsprobablysarcastic
Those books would make great movies!
SomethingSomethingTraLaLa
We have a similar set, my husband collects different editions as his hobby, probably have about 3 box sets and 10 individual books.
whyWontKeiraKnightleyReturnMyPhoneCalls
i found the same set at a garage sale for a dollar each except it's missing Fellowship. :(
ZerixTheArcticFox
I love LOTR v
ByDownvotingMeYoureAgreeingThatYoureWrong
Nice find! I looked into some nice leather kind copies of LOTR books but the prices range from "fuck" to "that"
Benzzillion
fuckin beaut!
TheVenerableJudgeTaintyMcPoo
Wow I can't believe these had been made into movies back then! Junior R. Tolkien really knew how to play the game.
Raxiel
Yeah but... Who uses physical media these days? Bin em and buy a digital copy!
ColonelColon
I love digital for how easy it is to store but don't tell me to bin the Lord of the fucking Rings.
I guess no one got the joke about confusing actual books for obsolete VHS tapes
rufiooo
zeacorzeppelin10
I can just see these relatively short books becoming some of the longest films ever, one even being split into three volumes... wait.
Borys610
Perversely - the shortest one
nipplepanties
Read why. I forgive Jackson

I have that exact same box set. I've had it since I was a little kid and first started reading. Great find @OP +1
dudemeister2000
Now tell me, you are 8 years old and your sarcasm level is already on point
Fuckin wish I was 8 again. Unfortunately I'm 31
MikeHawkins2016
Wish I was 31 again. I'm 57.
wanderingsphincter
Same here had to by a new set so I didn't ruin this old one. Didn't realize it was from the 70's though.
CanadaDad
I have this, too. I think I got it in 1975. I translated the elvish that was on the title pages in 6th grade.
GhostKerrigan
My dad has a similar set (red instead of old box), unfortunately my pre-teen self reading in cars and beds left them quite damaged
ChesterCopperpots
Same here!
WoefulWombat
Damaged books are loved books.

That's the one! With the old-school artwork
Yeah. You got the silver box. Okay! I had the red box. I forgot they came in silver, blue or red. SWEET!
The color in the picture is off. It didn't even register that it was the same set. #Brainfart!
