Don’t get me wrong, the McMinn Co. school board clearly wanted to avoid teaching the Holocaust through such a vivid masterpiece. But the fig leaf EXCUSE is that there are naked boobies in one panel. That’s the point of supposed consensus. Never mind they were drawn to depict the narrator’s mother’s bathtub suicide attempt. There ahr bOoBz in thar! Never mind half the student readers have their own boobs. No, the MOST IMPORTANT thing that nobody can argue with (right??) is to prevent young people from becoming titillated by nipples in a suicide scene in a Holocaust book. It’s like “we don’t have to agree about history and genocide, but SURELY we can all agree unclothed female bodies are the line we oughtn’t cross in a school.” Alas, if only the writer had left out the boobs, THEN we could all concentrate on the genocide. It’s all about preserving the moral fabric or something. Blech.
